Pep Guardiola’s speech as regarding the contract extension
Pep Guardiola has shown gratitude and happiness during his interview as he extends his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
“Manchester City means so much to me” Gaurdiola said. “this is my ninth season here, we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have really special feeling for this football club. That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons.”
“Thank you to everyone for continuing to trust and support me, the owner, the chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Ferran Soriano, Txiki Begiristain, the players and of course the fans… everyone connected to Manchester City. It has been an honour, a pleasure and a privilege to be here.”
“I have said this many times before, but I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much.
“Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.”
“I could not leave now” – Guardiola
Guardiola admitted that he “could not leave now” when asked why he decided to stay with city for another two years, with the recent four losses in a row lingering on his mind.
The two-year contract extension will see his stay at the Etihad stadium pass a decade, longer than his stay at Barcelona and Bayern Munich combined.
Guardiola explained: “I felt I could not leave now, simple as that, maybe the four defeats was the reason why, and now I cannot leave. I felt the club still want me, and that is why I signed.”
Instead of the current form pushing him closer to the exit door, he and his coaching staff are emboldened to rectify the situation at hand and return to their winning and dominant ways.
“Every time I sign the contract, it is for the last two and after I re-sign the contract I say okay the last two and still we are here” he revealed.
“So honestly I think we deserve to be here. I am sorry to say. I am not arrogant to say, but it is the truth.”
I think we deserve after four defeats in a row to bounce back and try to turn the situation.”
“In that moment, in the period, I had the feeling you have to take the right decisions for the future and I want to take it”
With an astonishing total of 18 trophies won during Pep’s reign at City, he mentioned that the team’s immense success and chance for more, was key in his decision to re-sign.
“The treble was a dream come true and the Champions league, especially for this club, and of course we make the four row, which no team has done before.
It has been amazing, but you have a past, lessons and mistakes that we have overcome to arrive in the moment where you are more stable and more consistent.
“we have to recover that because right now we don’t have it and that is the target we have to do.”

But for sure the club’s hierarchy have backed Guardiola with a contract extension that could prolong his tenure to over a decade.
The good thing here is that since joining city in 2016, pep has helped the team win 18 trophies, including their first Champions league and six premier league crowns.
In 2020-21 season city improved in their defence greatly to be compared to the previous seasons, conceding just one goal in twelve matches played.
Guardiola signed a new two-year contract with Manchester city until 2023. He won 500th games as manager after city beat Sheffield united 1-0 at home in the premier league.
And since then has the team soared high both in attacking, midfield and defense line. As a result of pep’s good works and unwavering support from the players and fans there were able to achieve what they have achieved today.
Pep Guardiola’s tactics and coaching style
Although much emphasis is placed on retaining possessions of the ball and dictating play, with the intent to have the opposing side’s defence chase the ball for extended periods of play, Guardiola’s team are recognized for pressing off the ball.
His players press and harry the opposition collectively in an attempt to win back possession of the ball. This collective press is only conducted in the starting third of the opposition’s pitch where less space exists and defenders and or the goalkeepers may not be as good at dribbling or passing the ball as a midfielder.
Guardiola has stated he tries to constantly evolve his tactics. After learning the style analogous with Total football under Johan Cruyff, Guardiola was particularly influenced by his time as a player in Mexico under his friend and manager Dorados, juan Manuel Lillo.
He has followed suit with that pattern and it has surely paid off obviously. Several of Guardiola’s former players, teammates, and coaching staff members, such as Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Luis Enrique, Erik Ten Hag and Mikel Arterta, have eventually pursued coaching careers and have cited Guardiola as an inspiration.
