About the Program
The Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program is a prestigious and multifaceted learning initiative that aims to invest in the region’s most promising future leaders.
For nearly seven decades, The Asia Foundation has been dedicated to fostering positive change across Asia, and this fellowship is one of the ways it empowers talented individuals to drive impactful transformations.
Program Components
The program is divided into two intensive phases:
Spring 2024: Leadership Training Program & Study Tour
The spring session, scheduled from February 18 to March 1, 2024, takes place in Cambodia. It consists of a series of interactive leadership training modules facilitated by executive coaches.
These modules are designed to develop critical perspectives, strategic thinking, decision-making, problem-solving skills, managing change, and introducing innovative approaches to leadership and management.

Fellows will engage in site visits with prominent development practitioners, policy leaders, and local innovators, gaining valuable insights into approaches that create positive impacts and advance development knowledge.
The program’s contextual backdrop in Cambodia will allow participants to explore theories of change and practical applications in international development.
Fall 2024: Leadership Dialogue and Exchange Program
The fall session, running from October 13 to 26, 2024, takes place in the United States. Building on the spring session, this phase aims to strengthen personal bonds among the fellows and foster new international perspectives and support networks.
The comprehensive two-week program includes policy discussions, unique learning opportunities, and leadership development activities organized in cities such as San Francisco, Washington, DC, and others in the U.S.
Program Benefits
Selected fellows will receive the following benefits:
Professional Development Award: Each fellow will be granted up to US$5,000 to design an individualized work plan to further their leadership skills and relevant professional experience.
This award can be utilized for specialized training programs, language study, regional forum attendance, workshops, or other enrichment activities.

Executive Coaching & Mentoring: The Asia Foundation has a proven track record in leadership development and offers mentorship-matching support tailored to each fellow’s background and professional interests.
Throughout the fellowship year, fellows will also benefit from a fixed number of one-on-one executive coaching sessions.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program 2024, candidates must:
– Have a demonstrable record of experience and accomplishment in one of The Asia Foundation’s fields of expertise: governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment and gender equality, environment and climate action, or regional cooperation.
– Be recognized and respected leaders within their professional fields and the larger community.
– Be under 40 years of age by January 1, 2024.
– Be fluent in English (TOEFL exam results are not required).
– Be available and able to participate in all program components on the specified program dates.
– Be residents or citizens of countries and regions where The Asia Foundation has programs, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Islands, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
