Hospital: University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin city, Edo state.
UBTH is a referral center which means patients are referred in from all other health institutions from the state and even other neighboring states so there’s always WORK to be done, One you’ll get used to as the day runs by but your body go first tell you.
Workload per unit/department differs per time based on HOs available on ground. e.g I had alternate days calls while in O&G yet the set after me does 1 call weekly.
Hence it’s important to always get a current update from someone on ground before making your conclusions as another person’s experience might not always be the same with yours
Accommodation: Available though works with a pairing system:
There 4 lodges currently in use. HOR (House officers residence) 1-4 with 4 being the newest. 1 and 4 are directly opposite the hospital (7500 and 6500 monthly payment respectively) are paired 2 to a selfcon whereas 2&3 are distant from the hospital tho you get to stay alone as it’s just a room, then you get to share bathroom and toilet(11k monthly).
Constant light and water is a sure one so yep you can buy land with your money for gas.
Upside: Not gotten through a balloting system, done on a first come first get basis but if you can press a few buttons, you will definitely get before those in front of the queue and also you don’t have to pay for the accommodation before you get it.
There’s an option for monthly payment or payment during clearance when you are leaving. The rooms are also big enough to accommodate 2 beds comfortably so yep, you can decide to buy yours if you are not willing to share beds
Downside: comes with just a wardrobe and bedframe so you get to buy everything you need.
Salary: Same as MDCN
Flex: Well… I’m not a social person so I’ve not explored anywhere but then Benin is a big city with so many options. From Kada Cinema to film house, the zoo and aladat. Besides ARD organizes parties and events now and then so yep, they flex a lot.
Orderliness: You’ll give IV drugs, some departments will require you to hunt for blood and even go to the pharmacy to get drugs.
Administration is Ok, once in a while you get to meet that chief in every department that everyone both past and present talks about but then you can be lucky enough not to collect from them either .
For other departments, you have to be to present at work daily but for CHER and SCBU, they run 2 shifts daily with off days in between (can be as much as 3 off days on a stretch depending on how many HOs are on ground ) so yeah your CHER and SCBU shege would be received in haliquots.
Edo people, very razz and vulgar sets of people. Always cursing and trying to show what they are capable of but in all in all, the few I’ve interacted with on a personal basis have been sweet.
Food: Call food is made available for everyone on call, cooked like a home meal most times and yep whenever transfusion is pending for long, we dey survive on am on a daily.
Uselu market is just #150 away from the hospital and you can get whatever it is you want to cook and there’s also a shopping complex and mat ice eatery just by HOR 1. If you want it cooked, there’s also Anu’s kitchen and ARD lounge inside the hospital, so yep food is not an issue.

R JOLAD HOSPITAL LAGOS
R JOLAD hospital constantly strive to promote an excellent state of health, R-Jolad Hospital has sustained a culture of continuous access to affordable healthcare services, expanding from less than 10 beds to over 100 beds in multiple locations.
Accommodation: is free. It’s a flat, you get a room to yourself but share kitchen
Salary: is 252k Monthly
Food is totally on you
Nurses give IV drugs. However, house officers are in charge of setting IV line and taking blood samples. They’re usually 3 HO’s in a department, so the call schedule is every 1 in 3 days.

Hospital: University of illorin Teaching Hospital, kwara state (UITH)
A federal institution, one of the largest referral centres in the country with capable renowned Doctors and professors. The center is an excellent place to gain experience with a good amount of work load. 8 calls in a month. Depending on the unit and Department
Accommodation: one per room( a self con) with a bed and bed stand, mattress, two standard sized wardroom, 20hrs lighting a day, availability of water etc..
Salary: same as MDCN
Flex: minimal flex except you’re moving to town which about #200 from UITH.
Orderliness: The working environment is moderately conducive, the seniors expect an HO to live up to the basic expectations, be nontoxic, they help where the need calls. Assessment is after every week.
Food: varies with ethnicity. One can cook if he/she so wishes.
Dr Uforo Emmanuel (Bsc UYO 2012; MBBS UYO 2023) (HO- UITH)
HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA TEACHING HOSPITAL GWAGWALADA (UATH)
UATH is a busy center. It’s located in Gwagwalada. Which is not in town. It’s a teaching hospital so you have medical students around. It’s about an hours drive from town. It is a tertiary center with a 520-bed capacity with facility for expansion to 800 beds.
Accommodation: There’s a single bedded room and two bedded room. They pay for the accommodation is 10k per month for single room and 5k/month for the double bedded room.
The double bedded rooms come with a reading table and chair and bed, ceiling fan, bathroom but no wardrobe while the single rooms have.
You can also opt to get accommodation outside the hospital if you wish or if the hospital accomodation is fully occupied
The double bedded rooms come with a reading table and chair and bed, ceiling fan, bathroom but no wardrobe while the single rooms have.
Salary: is same as MDCN (244k)
Working conditions: The administration is fine, majority of the resident doctors are friendly and willing to teach, same as the consultants.
The wards were recently renovated so they are really neat and well-laminated. The call rooms are equipped with functioning A/C’s and beds .
The work load on houseofficers is not so much because the hospital usually accepts lots of houseofficers (>100) so you’ll have about 4-5 houseofficers per unit in each department, thus, reducing the workload on each one.
It’s common knowledge that pediatrics is the best department to be while the other 3 have their ‘commas’.
Flex: Well the hospital is about 50 mins there about from down. You could always go out but bolt to town can be expensive. It’s best to have a ride. There are not many chilling places around.
Orderliness: Dearest, you’ll give IV drugs.nThe administration is fine, they won’t stress you. Everyone is ready to teach. Very hospitable people.
Food: The hospital provides call meal tickets that can be used to get food from restaurants within the hospital, you can also buy food from vendors or cook by yourself
Advice: It’s a good learning experience, use it to the best of your ability. UATH is the top referral facility in the FCT so be rest assured to see a lot of rare cases.
I’d rate my experience here an 8/10.

HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER ASABA (FMC ASABA)
The hospital is situated in the central area in Asaba so you have easy accessibility to lots of places with affordable transport fares.
Accommodation: very comfortable accommodation with almost constant light and water (however on some days there will be issues) the environment is neat and serene as well.
The accommodation is not free, you will pay 10k monthly, and due to the increasing number of HOs, they have had to pair some of us. They’re constructing a new lodge but that might take a while.
But overall I think it’s a lovely place to live in, especially if you have a cool roommate.
Salary: is same as MDCN
Flex: Asaba is a calm city with beautiful places like the Maryam Babangida Leisure Park, cinemas, lounges, and lots more. Trust me you’ll have cool places to explore.
Orderliness: Here nurses administer drugs except in the neonatal unit or some drugs like labetalol that you have to give yourself. Be ready to lose weight sha because you’ll do walk about ehn. The buildings are scattered hence that.
We don’t document on paper except a few times when the system is down and we have to use folders, laptops, and desktops are available in most wards. You will drag with the nurses sha.
Food: I don’t think food and foodstuffs are cheap here. That came as a shock but I’ve adjusted plus the market is not so close to the hospital but about 100 naira can get you there.
All the best

Good afternoon. I must really appreciate this. It is and eye opener and guide to helping new doctors make a choice on their house job placement. Howbeit, some facilities were poorly talked about, in the sense, that the information does not really help or convince to make a choice about the place eg University of calabar teaching hospital
