HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR TEACHING HOSPITAL(UCTH)
Accommodation: The worst I know of, however, is One per room with a shared kitchen, but you have to buy/fix everything starting from mosquito nets on the windows (it isn’t installed at all). PS: So far it’s not even free.
Salary: Same as MDCN
Upside: Conducive environment to thrive with senior colleagues.
Administration: You’ll have to use your own money to buy every A4 paper you’ll use for documentation during ward rounds (as in the continuation sheet), prescriptions, to investigations. Sometimes you’ll lack a BP apparatus and pulse oximeter to monitor your patients for days.
Food: Good food. You’ll find a variety
Dr. U (HO)
Hospital: Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos State
LUTH is a federal hospital and what I like to refer to as “THE FINAL BUS-STOP” for most medical cases in Lagos and beyond sometimes.
This further stresses on the workload in the center. However, the center is a good place to gain a lot of experience and learn as you go.
Accommodation: Accommodation in LUTH is not the best in all honesty. It’s just manageable. Just be grateful you have a space to lay your head within the hospital premises.
We have Rmo1, Rmo2 and Rmo3 which are allocated to house officers via balloting and you pay to the housing department if you get a space. Prices depend on the Rmo you get. There are other spaces though, like Rmo5 and Rmo6 which are not gotten via balloting.
Downside: You have to share bathroom and toilet with the next room.
There are limited spaces available compared to the amount of house officers in LUTH.
Upside: You get steady light and water most of the time. It’s within the hospital premises which make life easier for you as a house officer especially when you are on night calls.
Salary: It is the same as MDCN (244k)
Flex: Lagos is a metropolitan city. Quite on the high side for expenses though but if we want to talk about fun? Lagos is the perfect place to be.
You’ve got so many options to choose from no matter what kinda fun you want to have.
Orderliness: So far you do your job well, you won’t have a problem. Although, there are some malignant senior colleagues, you just have to learn to avoid their triggers.
Administration here is okay. Ways to sign your assessment at the end of each posting varies with each department.
Food: You probably wouldn’t have time to cook for yourself most of the time which is why I love the fact that there are various options of restaurants with different menu to choose from.
Dr. Uzor-Lawrence (MBBS OKADA 2022) (HO- LUTH)
Hospital: University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH)
UPTH is a big center, with some departments (pediatrics, burns, and plastic, Neuropsychiatry) that can boast of her own edifice with almost steady light and water supply in all the departments in the hospital.
The main hospital building is a four story building edifice with a very active accident and emergency department, laboratory, radiology department with a working MRI, and a new CT scan among other equipment.
The hospital is located not so far from the main PH city but also in a developing part of the city that is full of life.
The hospital shares boundaries with UNIPORT, and thus, we see an influx of UNIPORT students regularly in the hospital either for posting or for other activities.
Accommodation: 42k per year. We have a doctor’s quarters that currently house all the house officers and some interns in the hospital.
One good news is that we have a better edifice for the house officers only that is already under construction. It is 55% complete and will be completed soon.
The House officers’ quarters (HOQ) has its own independent water supply from the hospital, self-contained rooms with wardrobes, kitchen, toilet, and bathroom all inside for your convenience.
These self-contained rooms are divided into two man rooms and a one man room with just one wardrobe(this is limited).
Downside: Workload is choking in some departments due to the nature of the department. For example: burns and plastic have a month’s call, and it can be hectic.
Some departments like CTU, Pediatrics Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Urology all have a month call for any house officer posted to any of these departments.
In Nigeria, there are challenges, and thus, UPTH is not immune to any of these challenges.
We could have water issues and light issues, but these problems are always addressed as soon as possible by the ever-working CMD.
While the solution is being sorted out, temporary measures are always in place to paliate the challenges and give you a soft landing.
Upside: The hospital is very clean with immediate response to patients’ care in the wards or clinic.
There will be no transport fares because the HOQ is within the hospital premises.
Salary: SAME AS MDCN (244k Monthly)
Flex: PH is the happening city, with lounges, clubs, hotels and all the fun stuff you’ve dreamt about.
Orderliness: UPTH is a very organized setting, you will give IV drugs, blood transfusions, see patients, learn procedures, learn how to do simple investigations like ECG and interpret as well.
Administration: HR is great but you must follow due process at all times to avoid unnecessary stress.
Food: All House Officers are entitled to an unofficial two square meals every working day, three square meals on weekends and public holiday.
The food is really nice, a trial will convince you to save your money and be eating call food.
UPTH is always ready to welcome you and help you become a better doctor.
DR JUWE JEREMIAH
Ex-HO @ UPTH
2022/2023.
Hospital: University of port Harcourt teaching hospital (UPTH) (2nd Review)
UPTH is one the big federal hospitals in Nigeria and especially in the South South located on the East West Road in Rivers State.
It’s one centre that is known for its quality of doctors and any doctor trained in UPTH is accorded a sense of prestige and preference.
It has well trained specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, surgery and paediatrics.
It has several structures but the main structure has four floors
Ground floor: Microbiology, chempath, Anatpath, Haematology, central lab, clinics. Etc
1st floor: obstetrics and gynecology ( The 5wards) The main theatre and ICU.
2nd floor:. General Surgery and orthopaedic surgery.
These two are apart with there wards although on the same floor
3rd floor: Internal medicine
4the floor: internal medicine, Urology, paediatric surgery.
These are apart with their wards too. Within this main structure too are clinics, department of dentistry, Anaesthesiology, Radiology, community medicine ,. Family medicine, opthalmology, ENT. Etc.
Some specialties have there buildings.. like Paediatrics, burns and plastic, psychiatry, Nuclear medicine, CEPU, etc.
The hospital environment at night is a place you will like to take a walk because of the light and tree effect.
Accommodation: The accommodation is 3500 per month, That’s 42k in a year.
It has a double room and a single room , mini self contain that is just manageable. The building is old but it has another structure beside it which is to be completed God knows when.
The accommodation is in a very high demand but you are sure to get it even if it means waiting for few weeks before moving in, this is because interns, radiographers, nurses, etc also apply but priority is given to doctors and it’s domiciled within the hospital environment.
Downside: This one will be perceived by different persons differently but at UPTH, some units seem to have more workload: Neurosurgery, Neurology, Nephrology and some units in paediatrics and Burns and plastic.
But there might be periods these units may not be busy and the experience might be different for different HOs but these departments are known to be busy .. but you won’t be alone shaa, cos all units have more than one HO .
And the management can be annoying atimes especially when you don’t have some basic things you want to work with and when you need light and it isn’t there which happens once in a while
Weekend calls fit choke
Upside: Emergency response is prompt at A &E just that sometimes space isn’t usually enough for patients at A and E.
The quarters is less than 5mins walk to the hospital so no transport expenses.
The call food oo…… Everyday
Salary: Same as MDCN
Flex: I can tell you for free that UPTH is top on the list if you are inn for flexing.
First of all, the hospital shares fence with the school, infact one of uniport park is located inside the hospital premises.
I don’t need to talk about portharcourt , I want to focus on what is available just outside the hospital fence.
At the gate into the hospital you have Jovit and final fantasy fast foods and a clubhouse
At Uniport main gate just a walk away you have Dominos pizza and restaurant, at the choba junction just a walk from school main gate you have EVERY day emporium and Restaurants, Genesis, Market Square, Kilimanjaro, Sammies
The environment choke… If you want to talk of flexing you go tire before you start. Not to talk of what you have in port Harcourt city itself.
And hotels.
There are alot of places to go for fun in portharcourt, I can’t start listing. There are checks points at some point but security isn’t that tight in PH, everybody is relatively nice… Bolts are always available for your cinemas resort available, airport available.
Orderliness: UPTH is organized, Organized setting, you are expected to give all IV medications and infusions in all the departments, do post op treatment sheets and IV drug chart , write and send consults when necessary, and check patients’ vitals before consultant and SR rounds in internal medicine, give chemotherapy if in a unit that manages CA .
Administration: HR is fine, they won’t stress you, registration can be completed in a day or 2 , the only place that may take a little time is NHIS but it doesn’t take time.
People are different and you will meet very good , nice and friendly doctors and consultants and some maybe Toxic too.
Just do what you are meant to do.
Food: Honestly this is one very good thing about UPTH, the food is good.
You can save your salary eating at the kitchen.. and you are entitled to 2 meals Monday to Friday and 3 meals Saturday and Sunday till you finish your house job.

Good afternoon. I must really appreciate this. It is and eye opener and guide to helping new doctors make a choice on their house job placement. Howbeit, some facilities were poorly talked about, in the sense, that the information does not really help or convince to make a choice about the place eg University of calabar teaching hospital
