Hospital: National Obstetric Fistula Centre Ebonyi (NOFIC)

The National Obstetric Fistula Centre (as the name suggests) was initially established to cater to patients with Obstetric fisulas.

However, over time, the centre has diversified and grown to become a tertiary training facility with all four departments functional and a residency program ongoing in each of the departments. However, the O&G is still the most active in terms of workload/ case exposure.

Accommodation: Accommodation is free. The hospital provides an HOQ about 5-minute walk from the hospital, with constant water, and fair light supply.

The rooms are self-contained, with bathrooms and a kitchen ensuite.
Currently, rooms are furnished with a bedframe, mattress, bedsheets and two pillows. However, there are plans to include other furnishings.

Downside: Accommodation is not within the hospital. The level of case exposure in other departments might not be as much as you’d find in the Obstetrics/ Gynaecology dept.

You would probably get asked, “Isn’t that just a VVF Centre ?” about a million times before you’re done with the house job. Lol.

Upside: Because it’s a relatively new centre (first time accepting HOs), you’d find that most people are friendly and inclined to be helpful.

Hospital management also appears eager to ensure HOs have the best experience.
Weekend calls are single-day calls (as opposed to Friday-Sunday).

An opportunity to be exposed to a variety of VVF cases and management— especially if you’re looking to go into that area. Consultants are willing to teach, the environment is generally relaxed.

Salary: it is the same as MDCN (244k monthly)

Flex: Abakaliki is a peaceful city. Prices of foodstuff are relatively cheap, etc.
The International Mall is very close to the hospital; there’s also some nice places to visit within town.

Orderliness: considering it’s the first try, some things/precedents are being made up as you go along. One important thing to note is that the maintenance culture here is top-notch— so you expect to see well-kept surroundings, supplies restocked as soon as they are exhausted, prompt repairs/renovations, etc.

Standard takes: HOs give IV meds. You don’t need to go to the lab for investigation results or to retrieve blood as there are health attendants.
You don’t collect samples for investigations either

Food: Call food is okay. You get a meal on weekday calls and 2 meals during weekend calls.

On the whole, NOFIC is a work in progress, so I’m excited to see what the future holds for it.

Dr. Mowah N (MBBS NAU 2023) (HO- NOFIC)

Hospital: Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH

RSUTH formerly and popularly known as Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMH)
is one of the finest hospitals in the South-South region especially since it was transformed by the State Government in 2018 to a teaching hospital.

Accommodation: Accommodation is Free, the new house officers quarters was launched last year, 2023. Quarters is located inside the hospital.

Each apartment has a parlour, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with a fridge, microwave, AC’s and water heater, cooker, and gas cylinder. You are however solely responsible for your electricity bills.

Downside: The main issue is that the hospital is short-staffed, which means more work on the few people available.

Upside:  Work environment is very conducive, be it in the wards or even the doctors quarters. There are also functional facilities that makes the hospital run independently.

Salary: 260k Monthly

Flex: The hospital is located in the Old G.R.A. part of Port Harcourt which is very serene. If you’re into walks, cycling, jogging it would be great for you. There’s a City mall a couples of metres away. There’s also a sports club in the environs including a golf course.

Orderliness: organized, you don’t run out of continuation sheets, you have lab forms available, emergency drugs etc .

Administration: Good. Our contact with them was the initial time when we resumed work. They gave us 2days lectures centred around health and being a health worker

Toxicity: sparse

Food: we are given food when on calls. No meal tickets

Dr EREKOSIMA Odein (HO- RSUTH)

Hospital: Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH)

JUTH is a big center and it’s a referral center so you know what that means, a lot of work!!!!!

Jos is also the capital city and it’s very affordable and the people are very friendly.

Accommodation: it’s averagely comfortable. You have a room to yourself, a shared kitchen and a shared sitting room. You pay a rent of 85,000 for the entire year.

Salary: is same as MDCN

Flex: Jos is a beautiful, calm city. Nightlife is great with vibrant bolt and Uber to support your night waka. cinema available, resort available, airport available.

You don’t give IV drugs

Administration is fine, they won’t stress you. I didn’t meet any toxic senior colleague. The people are very hospitable.

Food: My favorite part! A lot of seafood, veggies, vegetable smoothies and periwinkles! Brace-up darlings!

Dr Linda (HO JUTH)

Hospital: CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (COOUTH)

COOUTH is a big center and the workload is quite much and stressful (it all depends on the number of HO present).

Very little pay though, but be rest asssured to pick up skills cause you’re going to meet emergency cases first hand and so will have to act on fast.

But the skills do not level up to the amount you’re being paid. The hospital is Located in the capital of Anambra state, Awka.

Accommodation: is affordable 5k per month without a roommate and 2.5k if you have a roommate.

Downside: The workload is much, with few HOs and the HO gives all IV medication here. Awka is a small town, insecurities are on the high side here.

The hospital sometimes have light issues, which makes working environment not conducive.
The accommodation is cool, but few rooms.

Upside: Regs here are friendly esp in the pediatric department. You pick up skills here if you’re willing!

Salary: 186k

Orderliness: Organized setting, you’ll give all IV drugs.

Food: Their call food ain’t all bad, but not so good.

Dr. Chinyere (HO @ COOUTH)

Good afternoon. I must really appreciate this. It is and eye opener and guide to helping new doctors make a choice on their house job placement. Howbeit, some facilities were poorly talked about, in the sense, that the information does not really help or convince to make a choice about the place eg University of calabar teaching hospital
