Hospital : Federal medical center Keffi (FMC KEFFI)

FMC Keffi is a small center, the hospital has just one center unlike others places that have more than a center.

They said Keffi is cheap, but to me it is somehow expensive maybe because it’s close to Abuja.(just saying).

Accommodation: you can choose to stay in the quarters or stay outside, the hospital quarters is not in the hospital and we have two quarters they are Baguda or GRA.

Bagudu advantage: large compound, you have a room to yourself but u will share a kitchen depending on how many doctors in a bungalow (most at times 2-3 per bungalow), furnished room with a bathroom.
Disadvantage: light and water issues

GRA: advantage: 1 room self-contained but not furnished, constant water,
Disadvantage: no constant light

The accommodation you will pay=132k

Salary: is same as MDCN

Flex:this town is dry, but we have some local spot sha, if you want to chill well then u Will have to go to Abuja it’s just 35mins drive to Abuja.

Orderliness: HOs don’t give IV drugs. and Administration is okay, they won’t stress you.

Toxic senior colleagues: expect in some departments but most of the senior colleagues are sweet.

Food: we have some affordable spots.

HOSPITAL: Ahmadu Bello University teaching hospital, Zaria (ABUTH)

ABUTH is actually one of the biggest hospitals in West Africa. The hospital caters for a lot of patients seeking specialized health care services in northern Nigeria.

Patient load is something else. They’re known for the utilization of recent innovations for medical practices.

They also receive a lot of philanthropic aid both internationally, locally, and individuals. The hospital is only second to AKTH.

ACCOMMODATION: If you get the nice ones, you’ll enjoy it seriously. It has almost everything, especially 48 apartments, and the Newer apartments; it’s like lodging in a hotel for a year.

Sometimes, it’s crazy getting it. You may have to press all the buttons you’ve got to get one, and that’s due partly to many other HOs on the waiting list. Then it’ll still cost you #10k per month.

DOWN SIDE: There could be a high patient load, so there’s work. Then it’s not easy getting accommodation.

It would have been enough if not because of the inclusivity of nurses, med lab scientists, dentists, radiographers, etc to minimize healthcare workers’ marginalization. So they were giving some of the blocks.

UPSIDE; mehn, I love the water heater in the rooms, not to mention the AC, fridge and others. And it’s one per room.

SALARY: it’s the same as MDCN

FLEX: Well, they don’t really embrace social life. You can actually have money and not know what to do with it, except you go to Kaduna City, Which is a lot like traveling.

Basic food stuffs are at the low too especially fruits, tomatoes and salad things if you can cook. Then if you’re are picture person, they’ve got a great clean environment, skyline, and lawns for sweet backgrounds.

ORDERLINESS: Just like every other hospital, each unit and department has its peculiarities and idiosyncrasies, you just have to blend in to fit in, pay your due, and get out.

However, some superiors can make it easy or hell for you as the case may be. Then don’t forget to make the nurses your friends, they’ll help your life.

FOOD: Call foods are consistent. If you’re looking for nice prepared food, you may have to prepare them yourself cus if you’re from the south, after eating good food at home, you won’t like the way they prepare food here.

Your other choice will be to pay doctors amount just to eat good food (you know what I mean) from food vendors.

HOSPITAL: AHMAD SANI YARIMAN BAKURA SPECIALIST HOSPITAL GUSAU

Accommodation: is good and furnished and also the cost of living is quite affordable, it’s so in the North

Orderliness: The hospital is organized based on Nigerian standard

Salary: was 178, 600 after deducting tax and co. And you don’t pay a different accommodation nor ARD fee.

HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF UYO TEACHING HOSPITAL (UUTH), AKWA-IBOM STATE

University of Uyo teaching hospital is a small center unlike centers you have 2 different hospitals, it’s just 1 here and there are walkways connecting each and every side( Don’t have much expectations lol) It’s Located in the outskirts of town.

Work load:
The workload ranges from mild to moderate depending on what unit you are posted to.
HJ for me,is subjective!
You may enter a new unit and everywhere is calm, another enters and have a different story to tell. So some units have more work than the other.

Accommodation:
We have Europe and America
Europe is more like the kpako side lol, has big and small rooms, most rooms are for 2 HOs, some rooms have 2 different beds while the smaller rooms has just 1, you may share kitchen and toilet with 2-4 persons depending if you have a roommate and if your neighbor has too. Good thing here is you always have people to talk to, social life is fun in this part of the building.

America is like Ajebo side, got washing machine, heater, share bathroom and kitchen with just your roommate,so 2 per room.

UPSIDE:
Accomodation in UUTH is free!
Accommodation is within the hospital.

Salary: Same as MDCN (#244,500)

ARD dues is #6,500 monthly

Flex: Uyo is a calm place, but for you to see nice spots, you have to go a distance from the hospital, there are nice spots to chill and transport affordable though times are changing.
The happening places aren’t much, not the city you’re looking for if you want all of those excitement you see in big cities.

House officers do majority of the bedside procedure like IV cannulation, urethral catheterization and so on,the nurses administer the drugs except in Paediatrics medicine and Paediatrics surgery where HOs give the drugs themselves.

Food: You can cook whenever you can, initially light was 24/7 but at a point in time, it changed..
Call food is not nice.

Dr Cisca Utah (HO @ UUTH)

HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA TEACHING HOSPITAL, ITUKU OZALA, ENUGU STATE (UNTH)

University of Nigeria Teaching hospital (UNTH) is a federal teaching hospital located at Ituku – ozalla, Enugu State.

It is one of pioneer tertiary hospitals in Nigeria and it is about 15-20mins drive from Enugu main town.

It is a relatively large hospital which is primarily designed to function independently from the hustle and bustle in town.

It serves as a tertiary center even to other tertiary centres around the region like NAUTH, RSUTH, FCM asaba etc. It is widely known for its cardio thoracic excellence and Oncology Center.

House job Structure: House officers rotate through the four major departments. Their rotation follows a strict pattern – Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Surgery ( MOPS) meaning that if you start from OnG your next posting will be Paediatrics and you will end at internal medicine.

Where you start from depends on the hospital management and your ability to lobby. You are allowed a one week leave from the 13weeks you will send in each department.(Some departments usually insist that you must take your one week leave while others don’t).

Work load:
The workload ranges from mild (Obs and Gyne), moderate (Internal medicine and Paediatric) to severe (Surgery) and it also depends on the Units you are posted to.Generally, the workload is light due to the large number of house officers quota allocated to the hospital.

Majority of senior doctor (Residents and consultants) are very kind, friendly and non-toxic providing an environment where you can communicate your needs, learn and play your part happily.

Although they request and expect strongly that you do every vital tasks assigned to you.
House officers do majority of bedside procedures ranging from the minor ones (IV cannulation, IV drugs, urethral catherization etc) to the major ones (chest tube insertion etc ) all depending on how willing you are to learn and the opportunities you have.

In UNTH, houseofficer are not the first on call therefore majority of the Emergency patients and thus emergency procedures are done by medical officers and Registrars ( You can still attempt to do or assist i.e if you are not busy documenting or giving drugs).

Accommodation:
There are 3 options when it comes to accommodation for House Officers in UNTH

1. Gate quaters: Series of inter spaced blocks made up of flats close to the main gate of the hospital (trekable to the hospital or 200naira bike). Each flat contains 2 or 3 rooms, attachments and a kitchen.

a. Room A: A large rooms with a private toilet and bathroom. ( 10k per month).
b. Room B and C: A smaller room ( 8k per month ).
c. Attachments: Parlors and dinning rooms converted to bed rooms. ( 6k per month ).

* Room B, C and attachments all share thesame toilet, bathroom and kitchen( i.e if you don’t want to cook in your room).

2. Accident and Emergency Quarters: three story building located close to the AnE quarters. Each flat comprises of a room, parlour, toilet and bathroom. (12k per month).

3. Outside accommodations: Private owned Hostels and buildings located outside the hospital (5mins drive from the hospital). Rent ranging from 180k – 300k per year.

*There are also options of staying in town if you are able to pay for accommodation and transport. Much more expensive.

*The beauty of your room depends on you, you can renovate as much as you like.

•Taking care of your living space solely depends on You. (I.e cutting the grasses and keeping your environment clean). The hospital management rarely takes care of sanitation in the quarters.

* There is a make shift market/Park where you can get foodstuffs and fruits for yourself inside the hospital but they usually lack some good stuff.
* Security is everyones business.

Accommodation is UNTH is share between house officers and Interns making it scarce and hard to get especially for the first 2-3months of housejob, of course, except you have connections with people at the top.

Accommodation is allocated through balloting. So every once in a while when there are enough empty rooms the hospital management organises balloting to allocate spaces to HO’s and Interns.

Food:
– You can cook whenever you want
– There are few places you can buy food within the hospital (at the different quarters) and at the medical students hostels and market/Park. Taste of food depends on the individual.

Light:
– Power supply in UNTH is epileptic. EEDC usually gives constant light to the region but the light inside the hospital is always developing problems every now and then. Therefore, constant light is not guaranteed.

– Not withstanding there are places in the hospital that always have light. The are supplied by Hybrid Solar Installations (e.g ICU, AnE, Labour ward, blood bank, theatre, New born, Cher, radiology dept) where one can charge his or her accessories on days without light.

Water:
– Just like power supply, water supply isn’t constant. Therefore, having a drum for storing water whenever water is pumped from the reservior from the GPee tanks outside each block in the quaters is an advantage.

Flex:
Enugu town is a beautiful place. With enough places for flexing and enjoyment. The only problem you will have is the distance and your pocket.

Salary: 244,500

Call Food:
Can be available for months (lunch and dinner) and can also disappear for months (whenever the hospital and ARD are having problems with the vendors).

ARD dues: 3100naira per month

Call Rooms: some are good, some are manageable and others are dilapidated. Some are under renovation.
