Hospital: Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital , Nnewi, Anambra State

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital was established by the Anambra state government edict number 10 of 1988 as Anambra State University of Technology Teaching Hospital Nnewi and shared premises with the then General Hospital, Nnewi.

On June 16, 1990, the General Hospital merged with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital.
It was then officially commissioned on 19 July 1991 by the then military governor, Robert Akonobi.

The hospital was renamed by the federal government of Nigeria to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital through decree number 68 in 1992, in honor of Nnamdi Azikiwe.

I can safely say NAUTH is the top hospital in Anambra and although this means a higher workload it all becomes worth it for the sake of exposure and experience….as long as you apply yourself.

Accommodation: The Hospital has dedicated House officer’s quarters but with only about 35-40 rooms available…
The rooms are quite spacious and comfortable, arranged in 2 wings(North and East) on 3 floors.

Each room comes with its own kitchen and toilet and shower and sitting room and for those who would like to stay outside…. There are several options for accommodation a walking distance from the hospital (rent prices range from 240k-400k annually).

Downside: Securing a space might be a bit challenging (unless you know someone who knows someone or you’re one of the first to arrive).

Also, not all rooms have running water and good plumbing, this is offset by the availability of taps on each floor and 2 outdoor water tanks.

Also, the hospital premises might look a bit cramped when you arrive but you’d quickly adjust

Upside: House officers don’t get to share rooms and both the toilet and bathroom is inside the room so you have your privacy.
You get to furnish your room as you please (A/C, dstv…whatever you want) and there’s light most times. Issues with water and light are also quickly resolved

Salary: it is the same as MDCN

Flex: Nnewi is a calm city. The cost of living is fair and there are a lot of handy lounges, clubs and eateries to visit depending on the kind of vibe you want. Traveling down to Awka is also an option and we have 3 day weekends here due to the Monday sit-at-home

Orderliness: Every department has its way of doing things though, some are more organized than others.
In fact, our surgery department has multiple units per specialty reducing call time.

With 1 week leave in each posting, Most doctors are nice as well as nurses, some would even help make the workload a little less stressful for you, but there are some toxic ones. There is also another site for our clinics with buses on the ground to take you to there at a low cost.

Food: The hospital makes provisions for call food. However, there are several food joints within and around the hospital.
Although I would recommend cooking. Nnewi is spoilt for choice when it comes to markets

HOSPITAL: AMINO-KANO UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, KANO STATE

AMINU KANO TEACHING HOSPITAL (AKTH)

Aminu kano teaching hospital, this is one of the best teachings hospitals in the north, top on the list when it comes to infrastructure. It is a hospital with sophisticated medical equipment in the north centre known for its incredible success in Renal transplant

some of the incredible things to look forward to soon include: interventional radiology, Radiotherapy and lots more

Housejob in Akth : I would say it’s an interesting place to be , there is good relationship with senior  and collegues .No much bullying except in O& G where there are some bullies.

Accommodation:

the hospital provides a fair accommodation #90k yearly (7. 5k monthly). It’s 2 rooms with 2 toilets and one Parlor for 2 doctors, with good electricity and water supply. Though there are newer ones but are yet to be lunched, standard well furnished house with 24/ 7 electricity supply, solar panels, and water.

Security: Rarely will you hear of issues with security each, building has 1- 2 security men at every point in time and the hospital is located in the heart of the city, so no serious issues with insecurity.

Flex: The workload is much like in every other Nigerian hospital, but it’s not too hard as compared to what we hear concerning other centres.

Affordability: In my opinion, Kano is the headquarters of northern Nigeria. Things are cheap in Kano but you can still find other northern states that are cheaper than Kano. You can save anywhere you are in Nigeria, even though we know it’s not easy anywhere

Salary: Same MDCN salary everyone is taking.

Sample: We house officers collect samples and cannulate patients while the nurses give all drugs except some very important drugs like hydrazine (In O and G) and calcium gluconate

DR Halima muhammad Avosuahi ( HO Akth)

HOSPITAL: UNIOSUN TEACHING HOSPITAL, OSOGBO

Accommodation: There is accommodation which is on average a nice place to stay. A room with an inbuilt bathroom and toilet as well as a kitchen. Water runs. However, two people are assigned to a room. You pay #4, 000 monthly

Orderliness: The administration is quite orderly

 Flex: This depends on your posting and the number of people in the department at the time

 Affordability of the town: The cost of living is fair, not too expensive.

 Salary: Salary is 162k basic from the state government, while the hospital pays 20k extra as an allowance

 Dr Felicia Temmy (Ex-HO)

HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE

FMC Umuahia is a big center located at the heart of Umuahia so basically, almost all you need to cope is around the centre.

Umuahia is the capital city, affordable especially the transport services.

Accommodation: It’s limited to about 30 spaces but very nice having a sitting room, bedroom which comes with a bed and wardrobe, bathroom and kitchen. There is a new house officer’s quarters under construction.

You will have to wait for older house officers to vacate before you get a space or you rent outside. It’s about 9,000 monthly.

Salary: Same as MDCN

Flex: Umuahia isn’t a place for flexing, Night life isn’t great here. Nice eateries around with Shoprite and Market Square????. No Airport.

Orderliness: Hmmm…You go too do houseboy/girl work sha

Administration is good, stress is unit-dependent but less toxicity here. Umuahia people are accommodating.

Food: Not anything extra but you will have options. If you have the money you don’t have a problem.

Dr. John-Shedrack(MBBS IUO) ( HO FMC Umuahia)

HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ABEOKUTA (FMC ABEOKUTA)

The accommodation is limited:

The HO Quarters is inside the hospital have 24/7 light but have only about 16 rooms. We pay 5k/month in accommodation

The one outside the hospital (Elite area) has about 16 rooms too. It’s a renovated duplex. Only has light in the night from 10 pm-5 am, but there is water and rushes inside.

There is another building under construction for House Officers inside the hospital. There is nothing in the rooms.

You’ll have to buy everything yourself or buy from older colleagues. There are houses around that you can rent. 200-250k for selfcon.

The hospital is orderly: To be fair. Your postings are exactly as scheduled. The departmental heads do their jobs well. You resume work by 8am or earlier depending on your postings and the responsibilities you have.

In my time, the ARD lounge was being renovated, so we didn’t enjoy so much of call room space. But the renovation is over now.

A sharp and cool ARD lounge in the middle of the hospital. Most Nurses do their jobs well, especially in Accident and Emergency.

But as with the health care delivery in Nigeria, there are loopholes too. Doctors serve IV medications here and some other stuff that nurses should ordinarily do.

Also, if you don’t put body, you may not learn much. You’ll just run errands and carry out plan, loan blood etc.

In my time, there was no flex. We had issues with MDCN, so there were just about 30 House Officers and the work choke.

Patient load is kind of much in FMC Abeokuta because we get referrals from a part of Lagos and Ibadan and then other parts of Ogun State.

However, they have sorted the accommodation issue with MDCN and more Doctors are being posted there.

Work will be light depending on the number of HOs on the ground. The environment is not exactly a toxic one if you do your job well and relate well with people.

The town is fairly affordable. Transport, food etc. But to be sincere, there are no good foods in Abeokuta.

To eat well you’ll have to cook yourself, and get good oil from your hometown.

There are 4 major markets in Abeokuta. Things are not so cheap as one would imagine, with Ogun state being an Industrial hub in Nigeria. Prices of stuff are not cheap and yahoo boys have not made things any easy
