Hospital: University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin city, Edo state.
🏥 Workload
UBTH is a referral center, meaning patients are referred from various health institutions within the state and neighboring states, so there’s always WORK to be done—one you’ll get used to as time passes, though your body will feel it at first.
Workload per unit/department varies based on the available House Officers. For example, I had alternate-day calls in O&G, but the set after me had just one call per week.
Hence, it’s important to get a current update from someone on the ground before drawing conclusions, as experiences differ.
🏠 Accommodation
Accommodation is available, but it follows a pairing system:
- There are four lodges (HOR 1-4) currently in use. HOR 1 & 4 (opposite the hospital) cost ₦7,500 and ₦6,500/month respectively and are paired 2 to a self-contained room.
- HOR 2 & 3 are farther from the hospital but offer individual rooms (shared bathroom/toilet) for ₦11,000/month.
- Perks: Constant electricity & water are guaranteed, so your gas might be your biggest worry.
- Upside: No balloting! It’s first-come, first-served—though if you “press buttons,” you might secure a spot faster.
- Downside: Comes with just a wardrobe & bedframe—you’ll have to buy everything else.
💰 Salary
Same as MDCN rates.
🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)
I’m not a social person, so I haven’t explored much, but Benin is a big city with options:
- Kada Cinema, Filmhouse, the Zoo, Aladat, etc.
- ARD organizes parties & events, so there’s a lot of fun to be had.
⚕️ Orderliness & Duties
- You’ll administer IV drugs.
- Some departments will have you hunting for blood or even going to the pharmacy yourself.
- Administration is okay, though you’ll occasionally meet “that” chief everyone talks about.
For other departments, daily presence is required, but CHER & SCBU have two shifts per day, with off days in between (sometimes up to three off days in a row, depending on available HOs).
So, your CHER & SCBU shege will come in haliquots.
🍛 Food
- Call food is provided—home-cooked meals most times.
- If transfusions are pending, we survive on call food daily.
- Uselu Market (₦150 transport from UBTH) has all cooking supplies.
- Nearby food options:
- Shopping complex & Mat Ice Eatery (by HOR 1).
- Anu’s Kitchen & ARD Lounge (inside the hospital).

R JOLAD HOSPITAL LAGOS
R-Jolad Hospital constantly strives to promote an excellent state of health. It has sustained a culture of continuous access to affordable healthcare services, expanding from less than 10 beds to over 100 beds across multiple locations.
🏠 Accommodation
Accommodation is free. It’s a flat, where you get a room to yourself but share the kitchen.
💰 Salary
₦252,000 monthly.
🍛 Food
Food is totally on you.
⚕️ Workload & Duties
- Nurses administer IV drugs.
- House Officers are responsible for setting IV lines and taking blood samples.
- Each department usually has three House Officers, so the call schedule is every 1 in 3 days.

Ex HO @ R JHL
Hospital: University of illorin Teaching Hospital, kwara state (UITH)
One of the largest referral centers in the country, staffed with renowned doctors and professors. It’s an excellent place to gain experience, with a good workload—typically 8 calls per month, depending on the unit and department.
🏠 Accommodation
- One person per room (self-contained).
- Comes with a bed, bed stand, mattress, and two standard-sized wardrobes.
- 20 hours of electricity per day and steady water supply.
💰 Salary
Same as MDCN rates.
🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)
Minimal flex unless you’re heading to town, which costs about ₦200 from UITH.
⚕️ Orderliness & Work Environment
- The working environment is moderately conducive.
- Seniors expect House Officers to meet basic expectations and maintain a non-toxic attitude.
- Seniors offer help when needed.
- Assessments are conducted weekly.
🍛 Food
- Food varies by ethnicity.
- House Officers can cook if they choose to.
Dr Uforo Emmanuel (Bsc UYO 2012; MBBS UYO 2023) (HO- UITH)
HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA TEACHING HOSPITAL GWAGWALADA (UATH)
Located in Gwagwalada, about an hour’s drive from town. As a tertiary center with a 520-bed capacity (expandable to 800 beds), it’s a busy hospital with medical students around.
🏠 Accommodation
- Single room: ₦10,000/month (comes with a wardrobe).
- Double-bedded room: ₦5,000/month (comes with a reading table, chair, bed, ceiling fan, and bathroom but no wardrobe).
- You can also rent accommodation outside if hospital rooms are full.
💰 Salary
Same as MDCN (₦244,000/month).
⚕️ Working Conditions
- Friendly administration; most resident doctors & consultants are willing to teach.
- Recently renovated wards—clean & well-laminated.
- Call rooms have functioning A/Cs and beds.
- Workload is moderate due to the large number of House Officers (>100), with 4-5 per unit.
- Pediatrics is the most preferred department, while the others have their “commas.”
🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)
- 50 minutes from town—you can go out, but Bolt rides are expensive.
- Best to have your own ride as there aren’t many places to chill nearby.
⚕️ Orderliness & Duties
- You’ll administer IV drugs.
- The administration is fair, and the staff are ready to teach.
- Very hospitable working environment.
🍛 Food
- Call meal tickets can be used at hospital restaurants.
- You can also buy from vendors or cook for yourself.
💡 Advice
- Great learning experience—make the most of it!
- As FCT’s top referral hospital, you’ll encounter rare cases.
- Overall experience rating: 8/10.

HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER ASABA (FMC ASABA)
Located in central Asaba, offering easy access to various places with affordable transport fares.
🏠 Accommodation
- Comfortable & serene environment with almost constant light & water (though occasional issues may arise).
- ₦10,000/month for accommodation.
- Due to the increasing number of HOs, some rooms are now paired.
- A new lodge is under construction, but completion may take time.
- Overall, it’s a nice place to live, especially with a cool roommate.
💰 Salary
Same as MDCN rates.
🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)
Asaba is a calm city with beautiful places like:
- Maryam Babangida Leisure Park
- Cinemas & lounges
- Lots more to explore!
⚕️ Orderliness & Duties
- Nurses administer most drugs, except in the neonatal unit or for specific drugs like labetalol, which you must administer yourself.
- Expect a lot of walking, as the buildings are scattered.
- Mostly digital documentation—folders are used only when the system is down.
- Laptops & desktops are available in most wards (but expect to compete with nurses for them).
🍛 Food
- Food & foodstuffs are not cheap—this was surprising at first but you’ll adjust.
- The market is not very close to the hospital, but ₦100 can get you there.

Good afternoon. I must really appreciate this. It is and eye opener and guide to helping new doctors make a choice on their house job placement. Howbeit, some facilities were poorly talked about, in the sense, that the information does not really help or convince to make a choice about the place eg University of calabar teaching hospital

Please can you review general hospital Isolo ?
GH Isolo is under HSC ( Health Service Commission) in Lagos, it is one out of the 5 general hospitals under HSC that does housemanship.
The others are the general hospitals in Gbagada, Alimosho, Odan and Ikorodu. There are rumors that some other centres have been approved for HJ but they haven’t kick-started it yet.
You will do all your postings in GH Isolo.
Accommodation: Accommodation is free and its located inside the Hospital premises. There are 2 quarters. One is a 3 storey building that has flats and 4 persons share a flat+ 1 person in the “master bedroom”.
The others are single rooms in blocks, Blocks A,B and block C is also a 3 storey block of rooms
In the flats the Master bedroom has it’s own Bathroom and toilet, while 2 rooms share a bathroom and toilet.
The single rooms have their toilet, bathroom and kitchen inside them.
UPSIDE: The working environment is friendly; doctors and other staffs respect one another. Non-toxic work environment, opportunity to get hands-on experience.
Doctors don’t routinely give IV drugs (just labetalol, MgSO4, Aminophylline)
The hospital makes use of EMR (Electronic Medical Record)
SALARY: #373,000 Monthly (Highest so far)
FOOD- There is a canteen within the Hospital, there are places to buy food (mama put) as well as eateries that sell very affordable and nice meals
