Hospital: Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos State

LUTH is a federal hospital and serves as the last referral point for many complex medical cases in Lagos and beyond. This translates to a heavy workload, but also a great learning experience.

🏠 Accommodation

• Not the best, but manageable—be grateful for a space within the hospital.
• Types of accommodation:
  • RMO 1, RMO 2, RMO 3 → Allocated via balloting, with payments made to the housing department.
  • RMO 5 & RMO 6 → Available without balloting.
• Downside:
  • Shared bathroom & toilet with the next room.
  • Limited spaces compared to the number of House Officers.
• Upside:
  • Steady light & water (most of the time).
  • Close to the hospital, which is convenient for night calls.

💰 Salary

Same as MDCN (₦244,000/month).

🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)

• Lagos is a vibrant metropolitan city, but expensive.
• Endless fun options depending on your preferences.

Hospital: University of port Harcourt teaching hospital (UPTH) (2nd Review)

Located on East-West Road, Rivers State, UPTH is one of Nigeria’s top referral hospitals, known for producing highly skilled doctors.

🏗 Hospital Structure

• Ground Floor: Microbiology, ChemPath, AnatPath, Haematology, Central Lab, Clinics.
• 1st Floor: Obstetrics & Gynecology (5 wards), Main Theatre, ICU.
• 2nd Floor: General Surgery & Orthopedic Surgery.
• 3rd Floor: Internal Medicine.
• 4th Floor: Internal Medicine, Urology, Pediatric Surgery.
• Other Specialty Buildings: Pediatrics, Burns & Plastic, Psychiatry, Nuclear Medicine, CEPU, etc.
• Nighttime Ambiance: A peaceful environment with well-lit paths and tree-lined walkways.

🏠 Accommodation

₦3,500/month (₦42k/year). Single & double rooms available (mini self-contain, manageable). High demand, but priority is given to doctors. You may have to wait a few weeks. Old building, but a new one is under construction (completion date unknown). Located within the hospital premises (less than 5 minutes walk).

🔴 Downsides
Some units have heavier workloads (Neurosurgery, Neurology, Nephrology, Pediatrics, Burns & Plastic). Occasional lack of essential work materials. Power outages happen sometimes. Weekend calls can be intense.

🟢 Upsides
Fast emergency response at A&E. No transport costs (quarters are close to the hospital). Call food is provided daily.

Same as MDCN (₦244,000/month).

🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)

UPTH ranks high for flexing! Hospital shares a fence with Uniport, making the area lively. Lots of entertainment options nearby: Jovit, Final Fantasy fast foods, a clubhouse. Uniport main gate: Domino’s Pizza, Restaurants. Choba Junction: Everyday Emporium, Genesis, Market Square, Kilimanjaro, Sammies. Port Harcourt city: Cinemas, resorts, hotels, clubs, and much more. Bolts (ride-hailing) are always available.

⚕️ Orderliness & Work Conditions

Well-organized hospital setting. House officers’ duties include: Giving all IV medications & infusions, preparing post-op treatment sheets & IV drug charts, writing & sending consults, checking patient vitals before consultant/SR rounds, administering chemotherapy in applicable units.

🏢 Administration

HR is efficient, minimal stress. Registration is quick (1-2 days). NHIS registration takes a bit longer but isn’t difficult. Mixed personalities among doctors—some are nice, some are toxic. 🔑 Tip: Just do your job well, and you won’t have problems.

🍛 Food

One of the best things about UPTH! Affordable & quality meals at the hospital kitchen. House officers get 2 meals (Mon-Fri) and 3 meals (Sat-Sun) throughout house job.

DR. VAREBA PATRICK (HO UPTH)

Hospital: 68 NIGERIAN ARMY REFERENCE HOSPITAL, YABA

68 NARHY has a wide-spaced environment that is neat and airy. Located within Myhoung barracks. Most places are beautiful as the hospital is undergoing renovation and People are also friendly and accommodating here.

Accommodation: a small spaced room with AC, fridge, television, mirror and window blinds. 2 people per room.
No payment for accommodation
No generator for accommodation, only NEPA.

Salary: 171,000
Still working on giving monthly stipends in addition
They don’t pay for the initial 4-5 months.

Flex: Easily accessible to both mainland and island in Lagos for your outings via transport, Uber or private car.

Work load is not hectic but we’re understaffed. Most senior colleagues are nice and willing to teach. A lot of hands-on (practical) and less of theory.

There’s call food, but it’s not alot.

HO @ 68 NARHY 

AE-FUTHA (ALEX EKWUEME FEDERAL UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL ABAKALIKI) aka FETHA

FETHA is known for efficient, high-quality healthcare and serves as a top-tier training center in the South East.

📍 Location

Located in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, the hospital has two centers:

• FETHA 1: Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics.
• FETHA 2: Internal Medicine, Surgery, and others.

The centers are 1 km apart, and a shuttle costs ₦150. The National Orthopedic Hospital (NOFIC) shares a boundary with FETHA.

🏠 Accommodation

• Top-notch HO quarters: 2 complexes in FETHA 1 and a 300-room self-contained complex in FETHA 2 for HOs & Registrars.
• Very clean, spacious, with 24-hour power & water supply.
• One person per room allowed.
• Almost free! ₦6k/month (₦72k for the year).

🔴 Downside

• Heavy workload, especially in Neurosurgery (14-day uninterrupted calls).
• Few HOs, so workload is intense.
• 7 AM ward rounds, morning reviews, presentations, grand rounds.
• Must stay overnight when on call.
• No recreational activities for HOs.
• Frequent queries & risk of extension.

🟢 Upside

• Neat hospital, some buildings under renovation.
• Prompt response & standard patient care.
• Exposure to rare cases.
• Friendly consultants (though SRs can be tough).
• Junior Residents (JRs) are very friendly.

• Abakaliki is calm, safe, and serene.
• No cult activities, kidnapping, or late-night crime.
• Good recreational spots: Cinemas, resorts, and an international market.

• HOs handle all IV drugs & infusions.
• Pass & change urinary catheters.
• Carry out blood transfusions, set IV lines, clerk patients (minimum 30 clerking cases per dept).
• Must wear corporate attire at all times.
• Logbooks must be filled.

🏢 Administration

• HR is efficient, documentation is completed in 1-3 hours.
• Chief Registrars help with accommodation, but works department can be frustrating.
• Some toxic senior colleagues, especially SRs.

• Top-notch call meals in FETHA 1 & 2 (2x on weekends, 1x on weekdays).
• Call food alone can sustain a HO throughout their house job.
• Plenty of food & fruit vendors around.
• Affordable markets for cooking.
