Hospital: Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital , Nnewi, Anambra State
NAUTH was established by Anambra State government edict No. 10 of 1988 as Anambra State University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, sharing premises with the then General Hospital, Nnewi.
On June 16, 1990, the General Hospital merged with NAUTH and was officially commissioned on July 19, 1991, by Military Governor Robert Akonobi. In 1992, the hospital was renamed Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) by the Federal Government under Decree No. 68, in honor of Nnamdi Azikiwe.
NAUTH is the top hospital in Anambra, meaning a higher workload, but valuable exposure and experience if you apply yourself.
🏠 Accommodation
The hospital has dedicated House Officers’ quarters, but only 35–40 rooms available.
- Rooms are spacious and comfortable, arranged in two wings (North and East) across three floors.
- Each room comes with a private kitchen, toilet, shower, and sitting room.
- Private accommodation options are within walking distance of the hospital (₦240k–₦400k annually).
⚠️ Downsides:
- Securing a room can be challenging unless you have connections or arrive early.
- Not all rooms have running water and good plumbing, but each floor has shared taps and outdoor water tanks.
- The hospital premises might feel cramped, but you’ll adjust quickly.
✅ Upsides:
- No room-sharing—you have your own private space.
- You can furnish your room as you please (A/C, DSTV, etc.).
- Reliable electricity most of the time.
- Issues with water and power are resolved quickly.
💰 Salary
Same as MDCN.
🎉 Flex & Social Life
- Nnewi is a calm city with a fair cost of living.
- Plenty of lounges, clubs, and eateries for different vibes.
- Awka is an alternative fun spot if you want more variety.
- Three-day weekends due to Monday sit-at-home.
🏥 Orderliness & Workload
- Each department has its own workflow and structure.
- Surgery department has multiple units per specialty, reducing call time.
- One-week leave per posting.
- Most doctors and nurses are nice, and some even help reduce your workload, but expect a few toxic ones.
- A second site for clinics exists, and hospital buses transport doctors there at a low cost.
🍲 Food
- Call food is provided by the hospital.
- Several food joints within and around the hospital.

HOSPITAL: AMINO-KANO UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, KANO STATE (AKTH)
AKTH is one of the best teaching hospitals in Northern Nigeria, ranking top in infrastructure.
It is known for its sophisticated medical equipment and remarkable success in renal transplants.
Exciting developments in the pipeline include:
✅ Interventional radiology
✅ Radiotherapy
✅ More advanced medical facilities
🏥 House Job Experience
AKTH offers an interesting and rewarding house job experience with a good relationship between senior doctors and colleagues.
- Minimal bullying, except in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G), where some reported cases exist.
🏠 Accommodation
- Hospital-provided accommodation costs ₦90k yearly (₦7.5k monthly).
- 2 rooms + 2 toilets + 1 parlor shared between two doctors.
- Good electricity & water supply.
- Newer accommodations (yet to be launched) will feature standard, fully furnished housing with 24/7 electricity (solar-powered) and water supply.
🔒 Security
- Rarely any security issues.
- Each building has 1–2 security personnel at all times.
- Hospital is located in the heart of the city, ensuring better safety.
💼 Workload & Flexibility
- The workload is significant, like in any Nigerian teaching hospital, but manageable compared to some other centers.
💰 Affordability & Cost of Living
- Kano is a major commercial hub and one of the cheapest cities in Nigeria.
- Other Northern states may be even cheaper, but Kano remains very affordable.
- You can save money, though it’s not always easy anywhere in Nigeria.
💵 Salary
- Same MDCN salary as other federal teaching hospitals.
🧪 House Officers’ Responsibilities
- House officers collect samples & cannulate patients.
- Nurses administer all drugs, except for critical medications like Hydralazine (O&G) and Calcium Gluconate.
DR Halima muhammad Avosuahi ( HO Akth)

HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE
FMC Umuahia is a large hospital located in the heart of Umuahia, making access to essential services convenient.

- Well-structured: Includes a sitting room, bedroom (with bed & wardrobe), bathroom, and kitchen.
- ₦9,000/month rent.
- New HO quarters under construction.
- Getting a space requires waiting for older HOs to leave or renting outside.
💰 Salary
- Same as MDCN standard.
🎉 Flex & Lifestyle
- Umuahia is affordable (especially transport).
- Not a nightlife hub—low-key city.
- Few nice eateries + Shoprite & Market Square.
- ❌ No airport.
📌 Workload & Orderliness
✅ Administration is efficient.
✅ Less toxicity compared to some centers.
✅ Workload varies by unit.
❌ You will do a lot of “houseboy/girl” work.
🍽️ Food
- No extraordinary options, but you’ll find what you need.
- If you have money, you’re good—options are available.
Dr. John-Shedrack(MBBS IUO) ( HO FMC Umuahia)
HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ABEOKUTA (FMC ABEOKUTA)
FMC Abeokuta is a busy and well-structured hospital, receiving referrals from parts of Lagos, Ibadan, and Ogun State.
🏠 Accommodation (Limited)
There are three main options for accommodation:
1️⃣ HO Quarters (Inside the hospital)
- 16 rooms only (limited space).
- 24/7 electricity.
- ₦5,000/month rent.
2️⃣ Elite Area (Outside the hospital)
- Also 16 rooms (renovated duplex).
- Electricity only at night (10 PM – 5 AM).
- Water supply available.
3️⃣ New Building (Under Construction)
- Inside the hospital but completely unfurnished.
- You must buy everything yourself or purchase from older colleagues.
🏠 Other Options:
- Self-contained apartments nearby cost ₦200k-₦250k/year.
📌 Work Environment & Orderliness
✅ Postings follow schedule strictly.
✅ Departmental heads are efficient.
✅ Resumption is 8 AM (or earlier, depending on postings and responsibilities).
✅ Nurses (especially in Accident & Emergency) are efficient.
✅ ARD lounge (now renovated) is available in the middle of the hospital.
🚨 Challenges
❌ House Officers serve IV medications & do tasks meant for nurses.
❌ You must be proactive to learn—otherwise, you’ll just run errands.
❌ If HOs are few, workload is heavy (e.g., in my time, MDCN issues reduced HOs to just 30, so work was overwhelming).
💼 Workload & Toxicity
- Patient load is high due to multiple referrals.
- Workload depends on the number of HOs available.
- Not a toxic environment, as long as you do your job and maintain good relationships.
🌍 Cost of Living & Lifestyle
- Abeokuta is fairly affordable (transport, food, etc.).
- However, food quality is poor—you’ll need to cook to eat well.
- Good palm oil is hard to find locally, so bring from your hometown if possible.
- Prices are higher than expected, likely due to Ogun State being an industrial hub.
- “Yahoo boys” have also affected the economy, increasing costs.
💰 Salary & Benefits
- Same MDCN salary as other federal hospitals.

Good afternoon. I must really appreciate this. It is and eye opener and guide to helping new doctors make a choice on their house job placement. Howbeit, some facilities were poorly talked about, in the sense, that the information does not really help or convince to make a choice about the place eg University of calabar teaching hospital

You will do all your postings in GH Isolo.

In the flats the Master bedroom has it’s own Bathroom and toilet, while 2 rooms share a bathroom and toilet.

The hospital makes use of EMR (Electronic Medical Record)
SALARY: #373,000 Monthly (Highest so far)
