The 32-year-old wrote on his social media channels: “I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years.

De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid at the age of 20 in 2011 in a £18.9million deal and he won the Premier League, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League. The Spaniard was also voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year on four occasions.
The former Spain international made a club-record 545 appearances for a goalkeeper and kept 190 clean sheets.

United sources have indicated De Gea’s contractual situation is looking bleak, with the 31-year-old so far unwilling to accept a reduction on his current £375,000-a-week salary.

Included on United’s retained list are youth striker Mateo Mejia and Under 21s player-coach Tom Huddlestone, both of whom have received fresh contract offers from the club.

If that is the case, United will have to sign a new No.1 goalkeeper, with Onana and Nathan Bishop the only options if, as expected, De Gea leaves as a free agent.

David de Gea is a Spanish professional footballer who most recently played as a goalkeeper for Manchester United. He is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation due to his shot stopping and reflexes which are superb.
Being Born in Madrid and raised in Illescas, De Gea joined Atlético Madrid at the age of 13 when his then coach Juan Luis MartÃn said  to him that Rayo Vallecano were set to sign him which was a lie.

A few days later, Diego DÃaz scouted De Gea and signed him immediately. He made his way up through the youth ranks at the club before signing his first professional contract in 2008, and as at the he was 17 years of age.

Throughout the 2010–11 season, speculation regarding how Manchester United would replace their retiring goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was widespread, and much attention focused on De Gea as United’s key target.
After Gary Neville’s testimonial against Juventus on 24 May, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that a deal had been done to bring De Gea to Old Trafford, but this was later denied by the player’s representatives and the Atlético management, with De Gea stating that he would not consider his future until after the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Following Spain’s victory in the tournament, De Gea was spotted in Manchester undergoing a medical with United on 27 June.  The next day, he reported that United were making him a contract offer, and the transfer was confirmed on 29 June for a British record fee for a goalkeeper of approximately £18.9 million.

Teammate Wayne Rooney backed De Gea to succeed at United and hailed him as a “strong character”.

He was hailed by Van Gaal as “unbelievable” for his performances, and was called the “saving grace” for being the one constant in the team throughout the season.
Amid rumours of a departure, he said he was “proud” to play for United, and was prompted by Peter Schmeichel and Gary Neville to sign a new contract with the club.

On 26 April 2015, De Gea was named in the PFA Team of the Year as its goalkeeper and its only Manchester United player.
He also won both Fans’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards for the second consecutive season. His save against Everton was voted as Premier League Save of the Season by Match of the Day, the second consecutive year he won the award.

In 2021-2022 season De Gea started the league season against Leeds United, in which he conceded a goal. He earned his first clean sheet of the season in a 1–0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On 26 February, he broke Peter Schmeichel’s record for the most clean sheets in Manchester United’s history, after a 2–0 win over Newcastle United in the 2023 EFL Cup final marked his 181st.
