free Accommodation for House Officers

Housemanship in Nigeria is tough to get, When evaluating a center for house job approval, one important criterion is the provision of accommodation for house officers.

Which hospitals in Nigeria offer the highest salaries for House Officers

Centers that offer free housing for their house officers are particularly appealing.

Here is a detailed list of hospitals in Nigeria that provide free accommodation for house officers.

1.National Hospital Abuja (NHA)

Best Centers for House Job 2024

NHA was originally called National Hospital for Women and Children(NHWC) designed to cater to the needs of women and children, however, in the year 2000 the name was changed to National Hospital Abuja with a mandate to cater to all.

NHA is where almost all hospitals in Abuja refer patients hence increasing the workload. Although it further gives that exposure.

Centers for Dental Housemanship in Nigeria

Accommodation: Accommodation in NHA is not bad actually, house officers have their Quarters and the rooms are quite comfortable, there are two blocks, blocks A and B with over 50 rooms, and there is also a general kitchen that is shared by 3-4 persons in a flat

Downside: There aren’t enough rooms in the Quarters compared to the number of house officers, also getting a room there is a hassle because it has to be allocated to you by the person in charge and, as you already know, everything is through connection in Nigeria.

Upside: House officers don’t get to share rooms and both the toilet and bathroom are inside the room so you have your privacy. The air conditioners are working in most rooms and there’s light and water at least most times.

Salary: it is the same as MDCN (244k monthly)

Flex: Abuja is a beautiful city, especially at night. Although the cost of living is pricey there are a lot of fun places and restaurants to visit depending on the kind of vibe you want.

Orderliness: Every department has its way of doing things though, some are more organized than others.
Some doctors are nice as well as the nurses, some would even help make the workload a little less stressful for you, but there are some toxic ones.

Food: HO’s usually have meal tickets to get food in the hospital although I haven’t eaten there tho, there are also other places within the hospital where you can also get nice food.

You can also have food delivered to you if you don’t have the time to cook or get it outside the hospital yourself.

Dr. Ononiwu Chimmuanya (MBBS OKADA 2022) (HO- NHA)

2.Asokoro District Hospital Abuja

Asokoro District Hospital is a state government hospital in the FCT, under the jurisdiction of the Hospital Management Board.

It is not so large, so you don’t have to walk far. Nonetheless it’s facilities are adequate and it is well maintained.

Work load: You’re to rotate through 4 Departments here: Internal medicine( not subdivided into units or specialities, so no rotation through gastroenterology or cardiology etc, which isn’t bad because you get to see a variety of cases but at the same time there is no consultant neurologist at the moment) , Surgery(General, pediatrics and orthopedic surgery), Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Pediatrics.

They have a good number of consultants in each department and senior registrars(except in medicine and pediatrics, that do not have registrars but medicine will commence their residency sometime this year).

But the consultants are very accessible. So because of the paucity of registrars in internal medicine and pediatrics so the house officers take the role of registrars.

So it’s a good centre if you want to develop your skills and be hands on as you get to do any procedure you want to do. They would teach you first though and make sure you’re comfortable before allowing you attempt.

The workload ranges from moderate to severe depending on what unit you are posted to. I think it is also dependent on the number of HOs in a department. If the HOs are few the workload can be quite severe atimes.

The senior officers (Medical officers, residents and consultants) are quite friendly and accessible.

The environment is friendly and majorly non toxic. It is an excellent place to learn and brush up on your skills. Provided you do what is expected of you they will be no issues…usually

Accommodation: Accommodation is decent and free but quite limited. There is currently a waiting list, people have been waiting for 4-6 months and still no accommodation.

So you can imagine the competition. It’s a 2 bedroom setup with a common kitchen and toilet. You dont’ have to to pay rent or any bills for that matter.

Light and water are basically almost always available and most have air conditioners, whether they work or not is a different story.

The security is good, they is usually an armed guard stationed at the main gate, with good security presence in general in that particular region the hospital is located.

Salary: #274,000 Monthly

Flex: Alot of places to go and hang out. It is in the heart of Abuja after all. But Asokoro is expensive!
Transportation is not so much of a problem within Asokoro, as keke and taxis are in abundance, as well as motorcycles in some areas.

Still always be security conscious. In summary, the social life around Asokoro District Hospital is really fantastic, no shortage of places to go to, it just comes down to how financially buoyant you are and the transportation you wish to use.

House officers do majority of the procedures and have to report to your chief present. Number of calls is dependent on the number of HOs, I would say about 8 calls in a month on average, sometimes it could be less or more, like I said earlier it is all dependent on the number of HOs.

Best Centers for House Job 2024

Food: You can cook whenever you want in the kitchen especially as light is constant. There’s call food but gotten with meal tickets given to each department to distribute. It is 2000 naira per ticket.
There is only one place you can buy food within the hospital, so variety isn’t an advantage. Especially since not everyone likes the food that is sold.
For an average spender, you may spend within 3,000 to 5,000 naira daily on food within the hospital. That is assuming you eat 2x a day.

They are other places to eat however outside the hospital, equally as expensive as the canteen in the hospital. To order food is also a viable option, it all depends on your pocket.

Also it’s important to note they usually won’t pay you until after your first 3 months. If you are lucky and finish your registration quickly then they will pay you after the first 2 months.

Nonetheless Asokoro District Hospital is a wonderful place and we look forward to having you.

Orderliness: Nurses give IV drugs, however we (HO’s) get to do more of handsome here since we have more of MO’s here rather than Residents.

Administration is fine, they won’t (??)stress you, though stress is normal everywhere
I didn’t meet any toxic senior colleague.

Of course FCT hospitals don’t appear on the portal, so you have to find a strong connection to get a placement here.

Dr Oko Onyedikachi G (Ex-HO MDH)

4.Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH

RSUTH formerly and popularly known as Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMH)
is one of the finest hospitals in the South-South region especially since it was transformed by the State Government in 2018 to a teaching hospital.

Accommodation: Accommodation is Free, the new house officers quarters was launched last year, 2023. Quarters is located inside the hospital.

Each apartment has a parlour, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with a fridge, microwave, AC’s and water heater, cooker, and gas cylinder. You are however solely responsible for your electricity bills.

Downside: The main issue is that the hospital is short-staffed, which means more work on the few people available.

Upside:  Work environment is very conducive, be it in the wards or even the doctors quarters. There are also functional facilities that makes the hospital run independently.

Salary: 260k Monthly

Flex: The hospital is located in the Old G.R.A. part of Port Harcourt which is very serene. If you’re into walks, cycling, jogging it would be great for you. There’s a City mall a couples of metres away. There’s also a sports club in the environs including a golf course.

Orderliness: organized, you don’t run out of continuation sheets, you have lab forms available, emergency drugs etc .

Administration: Good. Our contact with them was the initial time when we resumed work. They gave us 2days lectures centred around health and being a health worker

Toxicity: sparse

Food: we are given food when on calls. No meal tickets

Dr EREKOSIMA Odein (HO- RSUTH)

5.Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH)

Babcock teaching hospital is a private teaching hospital and a well organized ecosystem

The workload here ranges from mild to severe depending on the unit you’re in. You might be lucky to have no patient in your unit for like 3 days and then rises to like 10 the following days.

So it all depends on the week .. But since I’ve been here , it’s been soft for me . The center is a good place to gain a lot of experiences and learn as you go

Accommodation: Accommodation in BUTH is just average to me personally as I have to share bathroom and toilet but on the good side, you have almost 24/7 light , Wi-Fi, TV , Queen- size bed, and fridge. Accommodation is free and available for house officers

Downside: You have to share bathroom and toilet and kitchen

Upside: Accommodation within the university and trekkable distance from Hospital.

Salary: 260k (monthly)

Flex: No much places to flex as outside town is boring except you have to go to shagamu or Ikenne to flex which are neighboring towns .

Orderliness: So far you do your job well, you won’t have a problem. Not met toxic senior doctors or consultants since I’ve been here.. Most of the are friendly

House officers do majority of the bedside procedure like IV cannulation, urethral catheterization and so on ou and can call for help when needed .. the nurses administer the drugs except chemotherapy drugs where they house officer in general surgery unit will have to administer on Fridays

Food: You can cook free days and store kn the freezer for months as there’s always constant light. Good call food too.. There are only few places you can buy good food within the hospital, I mean meat , chicken and all .. Foods here are kind of expensive though.

6.Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, OJO (NNRH)

Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital is a military hospital located at Navy town, Lagos. It has a neat environment and beautiful scenery.

The roads are peaceful, secure and buildings are in close proximity to one another so you don’t get to travel long distances to chase lab results and blood. Yes, inasmuch as it’s a military environment, everyone is friendly depending on your own energy too.

Work load:
The workload ranges from moderate to severe depending on what unit you are posted to.
I consider it as an opportunity to learn as the centre affords you the opportunity to engage partially or fully in procedures, prioritising your learning over just the running around.

You gain vital experiences, especially skills and get taught on the job.
It’s not a teaching hospital so you don’t get to see the hierarchy of registrars and residents here except in units like Obstetrics and gynecology.

Accommodation: Accommodation in NNRH for house officers residence is fair enough. It’s a mini flat with two rooms(2 in a room), then you get to share the kitchen and bathroom with your flatmates.Feel free to renovate as you like. Security is good too.

Accommodation is free so I’ll say it’s worth it to an extent. There’s light most of the time and water too. Some rooms have working air conditioners and fridge while others do not so again, feel free to renovate.

Upside: Accommodation within the hospital and trekkable distance ranging between 2-5 minutes walk.

Salary: 171K plus a monthly stipend

Flex: It’s “Lagos” and there are places in Lagos. As long as you’re able to make out time to have fun, do what works for you.

Orderliness: So far you do your job well, you won’t have a problem.
Most superiors are friendly

House officers do majority of the bedside procedure like IV cannulation, urethral catheterization and so on ou and can call for help when needed .. the nurses administer the drugs and can also help with these procedures if you’re so occupied as long as you’ve established a good rapport with them.

Food: You can cook whenever you want light is constant. There’s call food which is not so satisfying but they try.

There are few places you can buy good food within the hospital and outside, you can also save the stress by using Chowdeck, glovo and other food delivery apps. For an average spender, you may spend 3000-5000 naira daily on food. It’s really not as bad as people made it seem here.

As long as you’re friendly, you do what you’re supposed to do and understand your boundaries, you’ll have little to no problem…I guess.

Work load:
The workload ranges from mild to moderate depending on what unit you are posted to.
HJ for me,is subjective!
You may enter a new unit and everywhere is calm, another enters and have a different story to tell. So some units have more work than the other.

Accommodation:
We have Europe and America
Europe is more like the kpako side lol, has big and small rooms, most rooms are for 2 HOs, some rooms have 2 different beds while the smaller rooms has just 1, you may share kitchen and toilet with 2-4 persons depending if you have a roommate and if your neighbor has too. Good thing here is you always have people to talk to, social life is fun in this part of the building.

Flex: Uyo is a calm place, but for you to see nice spots, you have to go a distance from the hospital, there are nice spots to chill and transport affordable though times are changing.
The happening places aren’t much, not the city you’re looking for if you want all of those excitement you see in big cities.

House officers do majority of the bedside procedure like IV cannulation, urethral catheterization and so on,the nurses administer the drugs except in Paediatrics medicine and Paediatrics surgery where HOs give the drugs themselves.

Food: You can cook whenever you can, initially light was 24/7 but at a point in time, it changed..

11.FMC JALINGO (FMCJ)

One of big known FMCs in Nigeria located in the North here in Taraba State
It has few consultants in the respective dept. for HJ training namely O&G, PAEDO, MEDICINE AND SURGERY , who are in charge of your clinical training, along sides with MOs who support in your hand on patient trainings .

It has several structures, which includes various wards for the above mentioned depts., 2 specialist clinics.

All other firms of Surgery like orthopedic, ophthalmology, ENT, RADIOLOGY, etc have their clinics but work alongside the general surgery, so during your surgery posting you spend few weeks in each of them respectively.

A big A/E where medicine and Surgery people goo for their calls. All the hospital environment are trekkable so you won’t spend money on transport.

There is adequate lightening in the hospital at night, and there is adequate power supply, like up 23hr 30mins.

Accommodation: Accommodation is free, but remember we are in Nigeria where it is easier to emulate bad things than good things, so that one won’t come tomorrow and they introduce rent fees, the fellow will now say but I never said there is rent fee.

Once you arrive, accommodation is sure for you unlike some places. There are accommodations, one old bungalow in front of the main gate where you have your room alone, although some other medics stay there too.

Then another classy self con inside the hospital which is well equipped, adequate water and power supply.

When you arrive newly, if there is no space there, you will likely stay in the old building, once people pack out from the main one, you are entitled to pack into the self con.

While if you are privileged to come when people don sign out already, you pack into the main lodge straight.

There is no over crowding since the hospital strictly keep to what they can handle.
There is Tennis board and lawn tennis in the main lounge.

EXPOSURE: O&G is the most busiest posting here, Haven’t seen or heard stories of toxic Chiefs since I came.

For Paedo, remember no students, so bombarding of questions na on your head and they are serious about teaching, so you must read oooo.

UPSIDE: Response to emergency is easier since both accomodations are less than 5 mins to the A&E or any of your posting or call venue, no transportation.
Market is also close to the hospital.

CALLS: Call starts from 4pm till like 2pm of the next day. U can rush back and freshen up early morning the next day if it is calm then and come back.
There is call food once on a week day and twice on weekends.

RESPONSIBILITY; You would be the one to clerk patients on call days, set lines, execute the treatment plans from your chiefs.

Pre-rounds checks and documentation if need be. Do documentation during rounds, post rounds attention to patients and their prescriptions. Write consult to other specialties when necessary

UPSIDES: No IV MEDICATION AND INFUSIONS, no drug charts.
No be you dey officially check patient vitals.

RECREATION: There are a lot of natural tourist sites, which I do see people embark on

ADMINISTRATION: Cool, no stress, a day or 2 is enough.

Food:
This is North, if you are cooking yourself, food stuff is cheaper.
Outside eating is #700 for lowest cadre. I don’t know much about canteens, since I rarely go.
