Accommodation: Accommodation is free and its located in GHL,Odan . There are 2 quarters. One is a 2 storey building that has 6 flats and 2 persons share a flat.

The other is a 10 storey building and has 30 apartments and 30 boy’s quarters.

27 apartments are just 1 bedroom flat of which 3 persons share. It comprises of a bedroom, a parlor, a dining room, a standard bathroom toilet and a standard kitchen.

One person takes the bedroom and the other 2 demarcates the dining room and parlor to offer some privacy.

But the demarcation is done by people and sometimes, when they are leaving, they may want to sell the demarcation to the new occupants. As high as 30-60k.

3 apartments are 2 bedrooms. The ones on the 10th floor and are shared by 4 people.. Each comprises of 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms& toilets and 1 kitchen.

The BQ is just a single room for a single person. 3 BQs share a small sized toilet, bathroom and kitchen. There is a rooftop which has a very beautiful scenery of the lagoon and the marina train station.

A thrill thing is that the doctors quarters is located close to the tallest building in Nigeria.

UPSIDE: The working environment is friendly, doctors and other staffs respect one another.

It is located in the happening areas of Lagos. Doctors don’t give IV drugs (just labetalol and MgSO4)  or blood.

The hospital makes use of EMR (Electronic Medical Record)

SALARY: #374,000 Monthly (Highest so far)

FOOD- Well, one can’t find lots of shops around. But there are shops within the hospital, there are places to buy food (mama put) as well as eateries that sell very affordable and nice meals

Dr. Adelotan Anu (HO @ GHL Odan)

2.LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (LASUTH)

LASUTH is a world-class teaching hospital, located at 1-5 Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja. Lagos is an uncommonly busy place to be (In other words, your eye has not seen, neither has it come into your mind, the workload that LASUTH has for you)

Accommodation: LASUTH provides very good, nevertheless, limited accommodation for its house officers. The doctors’ quarters can accommodate about 40-56 people, 2 per room. Accommodation is selected by balloting, however, over 3/4 is secured by CONNECTION.

I paid a refundable caution fee of 50,000 which was returned at my clearance on the condition that the room was intact (Who knows, the dollar rate may have affected the maintenance fee now)

The room has an AC and it is spacious. It also has a bathroom with a toilet, a bathtub, a sink, and a water heater. There’s a kitchen with a cooker and a fridge.

The room already contains a bed, mattress and pillow, In summary, it is a furnished self-contained except that it is not “self”…but “twos” and you don’t get to pick the other person, or you can, but with what? CONNECT.

In this life, build relationships, those are the future “CONNECTS” for your kids. There is fair power supply, there is mostly light from night till the next morning on most Days.

Salary: 290k monthly.

Payment is made on the 23/24th; there may be a few delays here and there but rest assured it will drop before the month ends.

Flex: LASUTH is located in one of the liveliest places in Lagos! Additionally, Ikeja is somewhat of a central location, so you can go up and down but that is if they Don’t injure you with hard labour.

There are supermarkets, restaurants, cinemas, parks, and even some of those aesthetic places you see around. (Do not finish your money)

Orderliness: At the start of every posting, your duty will be clearly stated to you by your senior colleagues 2 major things are to be available❕, physically, on the phone (get a good network); but not to the point of death and to communicate effectively.

Usually, House officers do Ward rounds, secure IV access, and give certain medications (calcium gluconate, MgSo4), and do mop-ups/plan following Ward rounds with senior colleagues. House job is like any other avenue for meeting and interacting with human beings.

There’ll be outstandingly wonderful people like Dr Adesina of BPSU and outstandingly wonderful (Sarcastically) people too but that is part of life.

You learn to deal with different personalities and become more emotionally intelligent.

The majority of your colleagues are nice though.

Some admin officers and senior nurses transfer aggression but no vex ok, (it is usually personality

dependent and you cannot change it, instead, try to build good relationships with them)

Food: Phase 2 is like a mini market in LASUTH, (they do not sell raw food o) PickRite, a restaurant in the student’s hostel

BJ Foods delivers Shawarma, rice, and spaghetti at an affordable price (his contact will always be on the group chat), A few snack shops around and then there is this Barcellos kiosk opposite Surgical Emergency where they sell one beautiful chicken pie like, so tasty, I say to you again: Don’t finish your money

3. Asokoro District Hospital Abuja (ADH)

Asokoro District Hospital is a state government hospital in the FCT, under the jurisdiction of the Hospital Management Board.

It is not so large, so you don’t have to walk far. Nonetheless it’s facilities are adequate and it is well maintained.

Work load: You’re to rotate through 4 Departments here: Internal medicine( not subdivided into units or specialities, so no rotation through gastroenterology or cardiology etc, which isn’t bad because you get to see a variety of cases but at the same time there is no consultant neurologist at the moment) , Surgery(General, pediatrics and orthopedic surgery), Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Pediatrics.

They have a good number of consultants in each department and senior registrars(except in medicine and pediatrics, that do not have registrars but medicine will commence their residency sometime this year).

But the consultants are very accessible. So because of the paucity of registrars in internal medicine and pediatrics so the house officers take the role of registrars.

So it’s a good centre if you want to develop your skills and be hands on as you get to do any procedure you want to do. They would teach you first though and make sure you’re comfortable before allowing you attempt.

The workload ranges from moderate to severe depending on what unit you are posted to. I think it is also dependent on the number of HOs in a department. If the HOs are few the workload can be quite severe atimes.

The senior officers (Medical officers, residents and consultants) are quite friendly and accessible.

The environment is friendly and majorly non toxic. It is an excellent place to learn and brush up on your skills. Provided you do what is expected of you they will be no issues…usually

Accommodation: Accommodation is decent and free but quite limited. There is currently a waiting list, people have been waiting for 4-6 months and still no accommodation.

So you can imagine the competition. It’s a 2 bedroom setup with a common kitchen and toilet. You dont’ have to to pay rent or any bills for that matter.

Light and water are basically almost always available and most have air conditioners, whether they work or not is a different story.

The security is good, they is usually an armed guard stationed at the main gate, with good security presence in general in that particular region the hospital is located.

Salary: #274,000 Monthly

Flex: Alot of places to go and hang out. It is in the heart of Abuja after all. But Asokoro is expensive!
Transportation is not so much of a problem within Asokoro, as keke and taxis are in abundance, as well as motorcycles in some areas.

Still always be security conscious. In summary, the social life around Asokoro District Hospital is really fantastic, no shortage of places to go to, it just comes down to how financially buoyant you are and the transportation you wish to use.

House officers do majority of the procedures and have to report to your chief present. Number of calls is dependent on the number of HOs, I would say about 8 calls in a month on average, sometimes it could be less or more, like I said earlier it is all dependent on the number of HOs

Food: You can cook whenever you want in the kitchen especially as light is constant. There’s call food but gotten with meal tickets given to each department to distribute. It is 2000 naira per ticket.
There is only one place you can buy food within the hospital, so variety isn’t an advantage. Especially since not everyone likes the food that is sold.
For an average spender, you may spend within 3,000 to 5,000 naira daily on food within the hospital. That is assuming you eat 2x a day.

They are other places to eat however outside the hospital, equally as expensive as the canteen in the hospital. To order food is also a viable option, it all depends on your pocket.

Also it’s important to note they usually won’t pay you until after your first 3 months. If you are lucky and finish your registration quickly then they will pay you after the first 2 months.

Nonetheless Asokoro District Hospital is a wonderful place and we look forward to having you.

Orderliness: Nurses give IV drugs, however we (HO’s) get to do more of handsome here since we have more of MO’s here rather than Residents.

Administration is fine, they won’t (??)stress you, though stress is normal everywhere

I didn’t meet any toxic senior colleague.

Of course, FCT hospitals don’t appear on the portal, so you have to find a strong connection to get a placement here.

Dr Oko Onyedikachi G (Ex-HO @ MDH)

5. BUTH: Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH)

Babcock teaching hospital is a private teaching hospital and a well organized ecosystem

The workload here ranges from mild to severe depending on the unit you’re in. You might be lucky to have no patient in your unit for like 3 days and then rises to like 10 the following days.

So it all depends on the week .. But since I’ve been here , it’s been soft for me . The center is a good place to gain a lot of experiences and learn as you go

Accommodation: Accommodation in BUTH is just average to me personally as I have to share bathroom and toilet but on the good side, you have almost 24/7 light , Wi-Fi, TV , Queen- size bed, and fridge. Accommodation is free and available for house officers

Downside: You have to share bathroom and toilet and kitchen

Upside: Accommodation within the university and trekkable distance from buth

Salary: 260k (monthly)

Flex: No much places to flex as outside town is boring except you have to go to shagamu or Ikenne to flex which are neighbouring towns .

Orderliness: So far you do your job well, you won’t have a problem. Not met toxic senior doctors or consultants since I’ve been here.. Most of the are friendly

House officers do majority of the bedside procedure like IV cannulation, urethral catheterization and so on ou and can call for help when needed .. the nurses administer the drugs except chemotherapy drugs where they house officer in general surgery unit will have to administer on Fridays

Food: You can cook free days and store kn the freezer for months as there’s always constant light. Good call food too.

There are only few places you can buy good food within the hospital, I mean meat , chicken and all. Foods here are kind of expensive though.

Dr. Fedrick Omoniyi (HO @ BUTH)

6. RSUTH (RIVER STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL)

RSUTH formerly and popularly known as Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMH)
is one of the finest hospitals in the South-South region especially since it was transformed by the State Government in 2018 to a teaching hospital.

Accommodation: Accommodation is Free, the new house officers quarters was launched last year, 2023. Quarters is located inside the hospital.

Each apartment has a parlour, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with a fridge, microwave, AC’s and water heater, cooker, and gas cylinder. You are however solely responsible for your electricity bills.

Downside: The main issue is that the hospital is short-staffed, which means more work on the few people available.

Upside:  Work environment is very conducive, be it in the wards or even the doctors quarters. There are also functional facilities that makes the hospital run independently.

Salary: 260k Monthly

Flex: The hospital is located in the Old G.R.A. part of Port Harcourt which is very serene. If you’re into walks, cycling, jogging it would be great for you. There’s a City mall a couples of metres away. There’s also a sports club in the environs including a golf course.

Orderliness: organized, you don’t run out of continuation sheets, you have lab forms available, emergency drugs etc .

Administration: Good. Our contact with them was the initial time when we resumed work. They gave us 2days lectures centred around health and being a health worker

Toxicity: sparse

Food: we are given food when on calls. No meal tickets

Dr EREKOSIMA Odein (HO @ RSUTH)
