Roma later confirmed that former player Daniele De Rossi will be a potential replacement for Mourinho in the Italian capital and has signed a contract until the end of the season.

The Portuguese manager guided the club to the UEFA Europa Conference League title in 2022, and following it up with a run to the UEFA Europa League final a year later, but the club have endured a difficult season.

Roma have one win from their past five matches – against Cremonese in the Coppa Italia – and also lost to Juventus in that spell.

Mourinho departs with the club facing a Europa League last-32 tie against Feyenoord next month having finished second in their group behind Slavia Prague.

Why was Jose Mourinho sacked

The main reason why Mourinho was sacked from AS Roma was due to their loss of form, they won only one game from their past five matches so far.

Their inconsistent recent form has left them ninth in the table and five points off the Champions League qualification spots. There have been just two victories in their last seven top flight matches.

It was as a result of the inconsistency that brought about the idea of ending it for him at Roma.

Mourinho’s contract was up at the end of the season and until last month, there was speculation he would sign a new deal.

He was due to return from a touchline ban for Saturday’s game with Hellas Verona, having been given a one-match suspension following a second red card in four days during the Coppa Italia derby defeat to Lazio.

He was appointed Roma head coach in May 2021, less than a month after he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur.

He he helped the club to secure the sixth place  in the past two seasons, but has missed key players through injury in this campaign – including Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss claimed before Sunday’s defeat at Milan that his strong track record for winning trophies meant supporters wanted too much from their side.

Nobody can deny that Mourinho did a good job in difficult circumstances in his first two seasons at the Olimpico and he certainly shouldn’t be be held solely responsible for Roma’s current set backs.

Daniele De Rossi as Mourinho’s replacement

Following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho as As Roma Coach, former Roma player Daniele De Rossi has been appointed as Mourinho’s replacement.

He’s expected to work as an interim manager until the end of the season.

Daniele De Rossi is an Italian manager and former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He is currently head coach of Serie A club Roma.

He is mostly known for his time playing with his hometown club Roma in Serie A, as well as a former FIFA World Cup-winning Italian international.

De Rossi is known more as a legend. He started his early football at Roma and he played for the club all his life till the time of his retirement.

De Rossi announced his retirement from professional football in January 2020, citing family reasons for his decision.
