🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)

N0 12
HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA TEACHING HOSPITAL, ITUKU OZALA, ENUGU STATE (UNTH)

UNTH is a federal teaching hospital located at Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, about 15-20 minutes from Enugu main town. It is one of Nigeria’s pioneer tertiary hospitals, designed to function independently away from the city’s hustle and bustle. It serves as a referral center even to other tertiary hospitals like NAUTH, RSUTH, and FMC Asaba. It is widely recognized for its Cardiothoracic and Oncology excellence.
🩺 House Job Structure
House Officers rotate through the four major departments: Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Surgery (MOPS). Rotations follow a strict pattern, meaning if you start in O&G, your next posting will be Paediatrics, then Surgery, and finally Internal Medicine. Rotation allocation is managed by hospital administration, but lobbying can help. One week leave is granted per department, but some units make it mandatory, while others do not.
📊 Workload
O&G – Light workload
Internal Medicine & Paediatrics – Moderate workload
Surgery – Heavy workload
Despite being a large hospital, the high number of house officers makes the workload manageable. Most senior doctors (Residents & Consultants) are kind and non-toxic, making learning easy. House Officers perform most bedside procedures, from minor tasks (IV cannulation, urethral catheterization) to major ones (chest tube insertion), depending on your willingness to learn. House Officers are not the first on-call, meaning Medical Officers and Registrars handle most emergency procedures. However, you can assist if not busy with documentation or drug administration.
🏠 Accommodation Options
House Officers have three accommodation options:
1️⃣ Gate Quarters (Near the hospital gate, walkable or ₦200 bike ride)
Each flat has 2–3 rooms, a shared kitchen, and toilets.
- Room A: Large with private toilet & bathroom (₦10k/month)
- Rooms B & C: Smaller, shared toilet & bathroom (₦8k/month)
- Attachments: Converted parlors/dining rooms (₦6k/month)
2️⃣ Accident & Emergency Quarters (Near A&E)
- Three-story building
- Each flat has a room, parlour, toilet, and bathroom (₦12k/month)
3️⃣ Private Hostels & Rentals (Outside the hospital, 5-minute drive)
- Rent ranges from ₦180k – ₦300k/year
- Living in town is also an option but costly
Accommodation is shared between House Officers and Interns, making it scarce. Allocation is done via balloting, and it may take 2–3 months to get a space unless you have strong connections. You are responsible for maintaining your living space (cleaning, cutting grass, etc.). A small market/park inside the hospital sells basic foodstuffs and fruits.
⚡ Light & Water
Electricity supply is unreliable. The hospital often has power issues, despite the general region receiving stable EEDC electricity. Some key hospital areas have Hybrid Solar power (ICU, A&E, Labour Ward, Blood Bank, Theatre, Neonatal, Radiology). You can charge devices here on low-power days. Water supply is also inconsistent – storing water in drums is recommended.
🍲 Food
You can cook whenever you want. There are few food vendors within the hospital (Quarters, Medical Students’ Hostel, Market/Park). Food quality depends on the vendor. Call food availability is unpredictable—sometimes consistent for months, then disappears due to disputes between the hospital and ARD.
🎉 Flex & Social Life
Enugu is a beautiful city with great places to chill, flex, and enjoy. Distance from the hospital to fun places might be an issue, and your budget matters.
💰 Salary & Deductions
- Salary: ₦244,500
- ARD Dues: ₦3,100/month
🏨 Call Rooms
Some call rooms are good, some are manageable, others are dilapidated. Renovations are ongoing in some areas.

💰 Salary
₦260,000 monthly.
🍛 Food
Food is totally on you.
⚕️ Workload & Duties
- Nurses administer IV drugs.
- House Officers are responsible for setting IV lines and taking blood samples.
- Each department usually has three House Officers, so the call schedule is every 1 in 3 days.
N0 14
Hospital: University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin city, Edo state.
🏥 Workload
UBTH is a referral center, meaning patients are referred from various health institutions within the state and neighboring states, so there’s always WORK to be done—one you’ll get used to as time passes, though your body will feel it at first.
Workload per unit/department varies based on the available House Officers. For example, I had alternate-day calls in O&G, but the set after me had just one call per week.
Hence, it’s important to get a current update from someone on the ground before drawing conclusions, as experiences differ.
🏠 Accommodation
Accommodation is available, but it follows a pairing system:
- There are four lodges (HOR 1-4) currently in use. HOR 1 & 4 (opposite the hospital) cost ₦7,500 and ₦6,500/month respectively and are paired 2 to a self-contained room.
- HOR 2 & 3 are farther from the hospital but offer individual rooms (shared bathroom/toilet) for ₦11,000/month.
- Perks: Constant electricity & water are guaranteed, so your gas might be your biggest worry.
- Upside: No balloting! It’s first-come, first-served—though if you “press buttons,” you might secure a spot faster.
- Downside: Comes with just a wardrobe & bedframe—you’ll have to buy everything else.
💰 Salary
Same as MDCN rates.
🎉 Flex (Leisure & Social Life)
I’m not a social person, so I haven’t explored much, but Benin is a big city with options:
- Kada Cinema, Filmhouse, the Zoo, Aladat, etc.
- ARD organizes parties & events, so there’s a lot of fun to be had.
⚕️ Orderliness & Duties
- You’ll administer IV drugs.
- Some departments will have you hunting for blood or even going to the pharmacy yourself.
- Administration is okay, though you’ll occasionally meet “that” chief everyone talks about.
For other departments, daily presence is required, but CHER & SCBU have two shifts per day, with off days in between (sometimes up to three off days in a row, depending on available HOs).
So, your CHER & SCBU shege will come in haliquots.
🍛 Food
- Call food is provided—home-cooked meals most times.
- If transfusions are pending, we survive on call food daily.
- Uselu Market (₦150 transport from UBTH) has all cooking supplies.
- Nearby food options:
- Shopping complex & Mat Ice Eatery (by HOR 1).
- Anu’s Kitchen & ARD Lounge (inside the hospital).
N0 15
HOSPITAL: UNIVERSITY OF UYO TEACHING HOSPITAL (UUTH), AKWA-IBOM STATE
UUTH is a single-center hospital with walkways connecting different sections. It is located on the outskirts of town, so don’t expect too much in terms of infrastructure or grandeur.
📊 Workload
The workload varies depending on your unit. Some units are mild and manageable, while others can be overwhelming. House job experience here is subjective—one person may have a calm posting, while another may experience intense work pressure.
🏠 Accommodation
Accommodation is free and within the hospital.
There are two main accommodation blocks:
- 🇪🇺 “Europe” (Kpako Side) – More social and communal. Rooms are either big or small, with 2 HOs per room in most cases. Some rooms have two separate beds, while smaller rooms have just one. Kitchens and bathrooms are shared with 2–4 people.
- 🇺🇸 “America” (Ajebo Side) – More comfortable. Includes washing machines, heaters, and only 2 people per room sharing a bathroom and kitchen with their roommate.
✅ Upsides
- Free accommodation.
- Accommodation is within the hospital, making it convenient.
💰 Salary
- ₦244,500 (same as MDCN).
- ARD dues: ₦6,500 monthly.
🎉 Flex & Social Life
- Uyo is calm and peaceful, but most fun places are far from the hospital.
- Transport is affordable, though prices are rising.
- Not a city for heavy nightlife or big-city excitement.
⚕️ Orderliness & Responsibilities
- House officers do most bedside procedures (IV cannulation, urethral catheterization, etc.).
- Nurses administer drugs, except in Paediatrics Medicine & Paediatrics Surgery, where HOs give the medications themselves.
🍲 Food
- You can cook, but electricity is not as stable as before.
- Call food is not great.

HOSPITAL: Ahmadu Bello University teaching hospital, Zaria (ABUTH)
ABUTH, Zaria, is one of the biggest hospitals in West Africa, serving northern Nigeria with specialized healthcare services. It receives philanthropic aid both locally and internationally, and the patient load is heavy, second only to AKTH.
🏠 Accommodation
Accommodation is available, but highly competitive. The premium apartments (48 units and newer ones) offer hotel-like comfort, including water heaters, ACs, and fridges, with one person per room. These are difficult to secure due to a long waiting list, and the cost is ₦10,000 per month. Other healthcare workers, such as nurses, dentists, lab scientists, and radiographers, also have access to accommodations, making availability even tighter.
💰 Salary
Salary is ₦244,000 per month, the same as MDCN.
⚕️ Work Conditions
Work conditions involve an extremely high patient load and a busy schedule. The hospital is well-equipped with modern innovations, but some superiors can be difficult. Building a good relationship with nurses is highly beneficial.
🎉 Social Life & Flex
Zaria is not big on social life, and options for leisure activities are limited. For more entertainment, one would need to visit Kaduna City. Basic foodstuffs such as fruits, tomatoes, and salad ingredients are affordable. The hospital environment is well-maintained, with a clean skyline and lawns suitable for pictures.
🍲 Food
Call food is consistent. However, doctors from the south may find the local food unfamiliar. Cooking personally or buying from vendors is a better option.

HOSPITAL: FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ABEOKUTA (FMC ABEOKUTA)
FMC Abeokuta is a busy and well-structured hospital, receiving referrals from parts of Lagos, Ibadan, and Ogun State.

📌 Work Environment & Orderliness
✅ Postings follow schedule strictly.
✅ Departmental heads are efficient.
✅ Resumption is 8 AM (or earlier, depending on postings and responsibilities).
✅ Nurses (especially in Accident & Emergency) are efficient.
✅ ARD lounge (now renovated) is available in the middle of the hospital.
🚨 Challenges
❌ House Officers serve IV medications & do tasks meant for nurses.
❌ You must be proactive to learn—otherwise, you’ll just run errands.
❌ If HOs are few, workload is heavy (e.g., in my time, MDCN issues reduced HOs to just 30, so work was overwhelming).
💼 Workload & Toxicity
- Patient load is high due to multiple referrals.
- Workload depends on the number of HOs available.
- Not a toxic environment, as long as you do your job and maintain good relationships.
🌍 Cost of Living & Lifestyle
- Abeokuta is fairly affordable (transport, food, etc.).
- However, food quality is poor—you’ll need to cook to eat well.
- Good palm oil is hard to find locally, so bring from your hometown if possible.
- Prices are higher than expected, likely due to Ogun State being an industrial hub.
- “Yahoo boys” have also affected the economy, increasing costs.
💰 Salary & Benefits
- Same MDCN salary as other federal hospitals.
