Dr. Vwaere

Tragically, Dr. Vwaere lost her life yesterday  in a ghastly Elevator Accident at doctors quaters in General Hospital (Odan, Lagos Island). She fell with the elevator from 9th floor  and hit the ground, spending about 1hr stucked in the faulty elevator and sustaining multiple injuries.

As Dr. Vwaere was being celebrated as a qualified Nigerian doctor following her six-year journey at Babcock University, her aspirations were high. She envisioned a thriving medical career, utilizing her newfound expertise to serve the community and society at large.

However, the path to becoming a doctor in Nigeria was neither easy nor affordable, with her parents sacrificing significantly to provide her with the best education possible and escape the shortcomings of the Nigerian university system.

After her induction, Dr. Vwaere commenced her internship at General Hospital (Odan, Lagos Island), which exposed her to the deplorable conditions plaguing the healthcare facility. The hospital’s only elevator had been in disrepair since 2018, and there was a lack of running water, indicative of the pervasive issues in Nigeria’s infrastructure and governance.

Regrettably, due to the “anyhowness” culture that characterizes certain individuals in the country, funds earmarked for repairing the elevator were siphoned or embezzled, leaving only a makeshift and dangerous solution in place. This reckless attitude and disregard for the well-being of others endangered the lives of everyone using the elevator, including Dr. Vwaere.

As she neared the end of her housemanship, Dr. Vwaere was eagerly anticipating the completion of this phase of her medical journey. However, fate took a tragic turn when she entered the faulty elevator one fateful day. The elevator plummeted from the 10th floor to the ground, causing devastation and injury.

Despite the brave efforts to rescue her, Dr. Vwaere succumbed to her injuries, leaving us to grieve the loss of a promising young life. Her cries for help during those desperate hours echo the sorrowful truth of Nigeria’s healthcare system, where even emergency services were hindered by the lack of necessary resources.

This heartbreaking incident exemplifies the fatal consequences of corruption, inefficiency, and negligence that continue to haunt our nation.

Dr. Vwaere’s untimely demise serves as a painful reminder that we must address and dismantle the culture of mediocrity and “anyhowness” in Nigeria. Our future cannot continue to be sacrificed to these vices.

May Dr. Vwaere’s innocent blood serve as a haunting call to action, urging us to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

We must strive for a better Nigeria, where our brightest and best can thrive without fear and where every life is valued and protected. Let her memory inspire the transformation we so desperately need.
